Description:
London: School of Archaeology in Egypt / Bernard Quaritch, 1915. vii, 38 pages + 62 plates, many folding. Folio. First edition. Riqqeh and Memphis VI is one of a series of books published to report the findings of the British School of Archaeology in Egypt. Much of the work was performed by Reginald Engelbach, an engineer turned Egyptologist, and Sir Flinders Petrie, holder of the first chair of Egyptology in England. The artifacts they discovered, many of which are pictured in this volume, form significant parts of the archaeological holdings of the Egyptian Museum of Cairo and the British Museum. The book is clean and tight, with a faint and shallow (1/8 inch) line of water stain at the top of the rear cover and the top margin of the last 3 plates in the book; there also is some staining on the spine that does not obscure the still bright gilt title.. First Edition. Hardcover. Collectible-Very Good. Folio - over 12" - 15" tall. Book.

During the period 1925-1931 the British Museum and the Museum of the University of Pennsylvania sponsored a joint archaeological expedition to the site of Ur, thought to be the capital of ancient Mesopotamia. Archaeologist C. Leonard Woolley was in charge of the expedition. Their most prominent discoveries were in graves in what was apparently the royal cemetery in Ur.
