Description:
Pentonville (London): George Cruikshank, 1837. 24mo. 2nd edition, with the 1836 date on the front cover and 1837 hiding in a background poster on the rear cover. Published as a paperback with black and white engraved covers and 24 hand-colored engraved plates on a single sheet folded accordion style. This example was rebound in full brown leather during the 19th century by Pomey, who has been described variously as a noted Parisian bookbinder or as an English binder. Both covers are intricately tooled in gilt & black and feature gilt letters of the alphabet around the borders. Covers are bound in. Everything about this book shouts that it is the work of famed British caricaturist George Cruikshank (1792-1878). Ostensibly a children's book (like most alphabet books), its themes, language, even the jokes clearly are aimed at adults. As he was wont to do, Cruikshank focused the alphabet on problems in British society: for example, E for Equality shows a typical upper crust dandy strolling…

London: D. Brown, at the Black-Swan Without Temple-Bar; J. Walthoe, in Vine-Court, Middle-Temple; and W. Mears, at the Lamb in Chancery-Lane, 1710. 2 p.l., [14], 231, [1] pages. Illustrated with nine (9) full-page copperplate engravings by Joseph Nutting. Note: the frontispiece is plate 3 of Nutting's illustrations rather than the portrait of Dunster that should be the frontispiece but is missing. Drexelius was professor of humanities and rhetoric at Augsburg and Dillengen as well as court preacher to the Elector of Bavaria. CONSIDERATIONS ON ETERNITY was probably his most significant book. This translation, which was published in multiple 18th and 19th century editions, is by Samuel Dunster, Prebendary of Sarum & chaplain to Lord Maynard and later Vicar of Rochdale. Recently rebound in dark brown sheepskin, with most of the original beautifully tooled front and back panels laid down, and with new endpapers. Five raised bands with red leather title patch. Pages are lightly tanned at…

Description:
New York: Harper's Weekly, 1865. 16 pages. Large folio (16 inches by 11 1/4 inches). Original complete issue of Harper's Weekly. Harper's Weekly was the most important American pictorial newspaper in the 19th century. Because the original wood engravings in virtually every issue are highly collectible, complete issues are becoming more difficult to obtain. The issue offered here focuses on the events following the assassination of Lincoln. On the front page are articles on the assassination and the funeral along with three original wood engravings: one showing the ruins of the Garrett barn where John Wilkes Booth was shot; another showing the house where Booth died; and a third engraving of the house of Booth's co-conspirator David Herold. On the interior are multiple engravings of various Lincoln funeral sites. Among the unrelated engravings is the double-page centerfold by Thomas Nast, entitled "Palm Sunday"--one side portraying the arrival of Jesus in Jerusalem…
