Philadelphia: Daniel Rice & James G. Clark, 1844. Folio (18 3/8 inches by 14 1/2 inches) print from the third and final folio edition. The print is in excellent condition, with vivid coloring and none of the foxing frequently seen (see the Smithsonian's copy, for example). There are some smudges in the margins--well away from the image; there is one very small chip out of the bottom right corner in the margin and one 1/2" closed tear on the bottom edge. It is appropriate that McKenney and Hall identified this leader as "The Orator" because the Winnebago called themselves "Hochungra," which translates as "People of the Big Voice." Oratory was highly valued by tribe members, and it was natural that they would send their best orator to speak for them in negotiations in Washington.. Third Edition. Paper. Collectible-Very Good. Hungry Horse, Montana: Ace Powell, 1960. Original etching. 7 3/8 inches by 4 1/4 inches on artist paper measuring 9 3/8 inches by 6 1/2 inches. Signed and numbered (15/50) by the artist in pencil. Montana artist Ace Powell (1912-1978) was perhaps the most prolific artist of the American West in the 20th century. Strongly influenced by the artist Charles M. Russell, Powell created what he knew best, paintings, etchings, and sculptures of Montana life and scenery, cowboys, and the Blackfeet Indians. His works can be found in museums and private collections throughout the United States; an especially good selection is held by the Hockaday Museum in Kalispell, Montana, where Powell lived the last 13 years of his life. The Yosemite Valley image is one of series that was commissioned by the Anthony brothers who hired photographer T. C. Roche to travel through Yosemite in 1870-1871. Featured in the foreground of the image is Roche's portable dark tent. On the verso is a large Anthony advertising label that lists the "principal places of interest" in Yosemite. The albumen prints are in excellent condition with good contrast, and the yellow mount has only a hint of edgewear; there are two 1-inch long inked lines across the label on the back of the card. Taos, New Mexico: Anna Barry, 1946. Original serigraph/ silkscreen print, signed and titled in pencil by the artist. The image is 5 inches by 7 1/4 inches on a sheet that is 6 inches by 8 1/2 inches. The Taos Pueblo people have lived in New Mexico more than 1000 years. The serigraph portrays Taos Pueblo male dancers performing a traditional ceremonial dance in which men wear simulated horsetails--they originally wore real horsetails! The serigraph is by American painter and printmaker Anna Barry (1907-2001). With her husband and fellow artist Ira Moscowitz, she lived in Taos, New Mexico from 1944 until 1955.
