A Londres (London), 1780., 1780 368p. "Fragmens de Philosophie Morale" pp. [301]-368 + Four engraved plates. Some light edge browning. 24 mo. 125 mm. Contemporary full leather French binding; worn at joints. Marbled endpapers. All edges gilt. Hardbound. A very good copy of a scarce little work. After studying with the Jesuits and teaching in their colleges at Clermont and Toulouse, Marmontel (1723-1799), acting on the advice of Voltaire, set out for Paris (at the age of twenty-two) to seek literary fame. He wrote a series of minor plays which brought him somewhat permanent admission to Parisian literary and social circles. It was during this time that he wrote articles for the 'Encyclopedie' on the 'Elements of Literature' which still rank among the French classics. In 1758 he gained the patronage of Madame de Pompadour. She obtained for him a place as a civil servant, and the management of the journal, 'Le Mercure' where his charming 'Contes Moraux' were… Read More

Description:
Chez, Barba, Paris: An X-1802., 1802 180p. + Color frontis of Brunet reciting his puns, satires, and jokes and tearing out his hair. Some age stain. Edges uncut. Early full vellum binding. Ragueneau de La Chainaye (1777-1850) was a popular comic and dramatic stage performer who kept his humor and head throughout the French Revolution. Quite scarce. This work first appeared under the title of "Des calembourgs comme s'il en pleuvait" in 1800. Following great popular success, it had a 2nd and 3rd edition under this title, which then became "Brunétiana" in the 4th edition in 1801. Our example is probably the 5th edition (1802). This edition had, in addition to the hand-colored frontispiece which represents the famous actor Brunet in the role of Jocrisse, sometimes there is a second engraving of Brunet between pages 12 and 13. Our copy does not include this second engraving. No copies of this edition are located by OCLC in the U.S. FR-VOYAGE 3RD FL. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Read More

The boards tooled in blind with a central star-burst within a diamond. Spine and borders gold. Engraved Ex Libris of the Bibliotheque Congregation de Notre Dame, Maison des Oiseaux. Oval engraved French booksellers label (Potey). Brunet V:88. Sallust was a famed Roman historian and politician. He was tribune of the people (52 B.C.) and praetor (46). He was ejected (50) from the senate ostensibly for adultery, but more probably because of his partisanship for Caesar. He served with Caesar after his pra etorship, and was his governor in Numidia; he was subsequently accused of misusing his governorship for personal gain. His principal works are the Bellum Catilinae, on the conspiracy of Catiline, and his account of the Jugurthine War, Bellum Jugurthinum. His history of Rome is extant only in fragments; it probably covered the period 78 B.C. to 67 B.C. As a… Read More
