Harper & Brothers, New York & London: 1903., 1903 Two Volumes + 120 Full-page and Numerous Text Illustrations; 16 Colored Plates from Dr. Nansen's Own Sketches; Etched Portrait; and Photogravures. Large 8vo. Original full dark blue cloth binding, spine gold lettered. Slight spotting to binding, but still a very nice set. In 1893, with a crew of 12 men and five years' supplies, Nansen left the shores of Norway and sailed through the Northeast Passage to the New Siberian Islands, where he allowed the Fram to become frozen into the ice. After a dramatic journey home again, they reached Norway on 13 August 1896, the same day…

An account in Italian of the Second German North polar Expedition (1869-1870) and it's second ship: schooner-brig "Hansa" - a coal tender under Captain Hegemann. Leaving Bremerhaven with the main ship "Germania", in 1869, the general task was exploration of the region north of 74o at the eastern coast of Greenland. The ships are separated forever in foggy weather on July 20. In September 1869 the "Hansa" is locked in the pack-ice at 73o 25,7' N - drifting south. By October the ship is heavily damaged by the ice-pressure, and sinks 10 km off the east coast of Greenland at 70o 52'N 21o W. The crew of 14 escaped to a southward drifting ice floe and spends the Polar…
