First edition, first printing. 216 p. Red-orange hardcover with 1/4 cloth binding and red lettering to spine. Book shows some edgewear/bumping (see photos) but is internally Fine. The dust jacket also has edgewear, including a small tear, but is otherwise Near Fine and housed in a removable protective sleeve. Please see photos. From the dust jacket: Susan Musgrave is one of Canada's foremost poets whose work has been described as mesmerizing, startling and brilliant. When her first novel, The Charcoal Burners, was published in 1980, critics compared it favourably to works of Margaret Atwood, Marian Engel and Leonard Cohen. THE DANCING CHICKEN represents yet another departure for this daring writer. It casts a satiric eye on the alliances and misalliances of small-town institutions and families, specifically the Holmes family. Cod Holmes, who considers himself unhappily married to Nora, is on the verge of falling in love with Ursula, who is slightly mad. He is also spectacularly unfaithful with nurse… Read More

Presumably first edition. 152 p. Mild shelfwear, otherwise Fine. From the rear: "The rapidly unreeling dream (or nightmare) of each of these stories—stories of drifters, hookers, highway victims, corporate spies and con-men, dead-- beat dads and the heartbroken—comes at us from off-kilter angles that are wholly the author's own. His imagination is bold and unbreaking, his instinct for the aptest detail is sure-fire. Here is an unignorable debut." - Steven Heighton, author of the bestselling novel The Shadow Boxer "Rife with the blackest humour, quirky, unadorned, Oscar Martens' stories are full of characters on a collision course with each other and with the world. In the resulting aftermath, we gain this original new voice, this dark, edgy satirist of the human condition." - Nadine McInnis, author of the acclaimed Quicksilver Tapping into the voyeuristic human compulsion that attracts us to the dirty little secrets of people's lives, Oscar Martens' stories peel back layers of contemporary… Read More

Description:
First Edition. 284 p. ; includes Bibliography and Index (p. 275-284). Blue-green hardcover with gilt lettering to cover and spine, has very minor shelfwear and some bumping to tip and heel of spine, in price-clipped dust jacket which exhibits some edgewear, sunning, and minor soiling (mainly to rear cover) and is housed in an adjustable plastic sleeve. Internally, the book is Near Fine with deckled edge and illustrated endpapers. The colour dust jacket is by famous illustrator Paul Galdone (1907-1987). Though mostly noted for children's picture books, this early illustration (which appears to have gone unnoticed) depicts the lusty, rough-and-tumble, whisky-soaked life of northern goldminers. From the dust jacket: Gold mining with a pick and shovel is hard work. In the Far North it also entails being out in all weathers, risk of frostbite, solitude [...] What might have been a sordid and ugly account of predatory villainy becomes in his hands a tragicomedy of the last time America blew off steam.

First Edition.189 p.; ill. (frontispiece). Vintage green cloth hardcover with red debossed lettering and blindstamped decorative border shows only minor wear, most notably a slight fading of colour and some edgewear to tip and heel of spine. There is some light foxing of foredges as well as on a number of the pages, the frontispiece has browned the title page (see image) and the binding is cracked but holding at pp. 128/129. The dust jacket is aged with sunning, some edgewear, and chipping, but has been housed in a removable protective sleeve to prevent further wear. See images. From the dust jacket flap: Mr. Eden Phillpotts' book, The Human Boy, has been a joy to many thousands of readers. A Human Boy's Diary takes the form of a schoolboy's diary kept during his first three terms. He is not at all an ordinary schoolboy, and his comrades—the poet, the wicked boy, and the Jew boy who lends money at interest, and many others—are both witty and shrewd. From the publisher: This issue contains things that will make you laugh, smile, and cry - visiting friends in the hospital, the early morning, the story of the zine's title, picking up your friends shifts at work, Shelley's annual trips to India, and organizing drag shows. But the real gem of this issue is the story of teaching 9 to 15-year-olds how to fix bikes. It transcends the obvious and covers all kinds of education - homophobia, identity, feminism, and to question what we mean when we say 'community'.
