Contemporary manuscript copy of map from book published in London by Henry Colburn & Richard Bentley in 1831. This map measures 37 x 42.5 cm. and shows 160 x 175 degrees West Longitude (so indicated along bottom). The only words are "Beering Strait" and "Cape Prince of Wales" and "1817. July. Ice." Shows the track of the small boat sent out to reach the Franklin and Parry parties, going along the north coast of the Seward Peninsula to Point Barrow. Copied from Beechey's Narrative of a Voyage to the Pacific and Beering's Strait to co-operate with The Polar Expeditions: Performed in His Majesty's Ship Blossom, under the Command of Captain F. W. Beechey, R.N. in the Years 1825, 26, 27, 28. Very Good: flat, never folded; bottom edge reinforced with contemporary? brown-paper tape. Stock#Flat181.

All forty-eight Blathwayt maps, which form what has been called the first atlas of the British Empire, are discussed in the Commentary. Assembled by English colonial administrators, for whom they were working tools, these maps show the area of English overseas colonial and commercial interest, especially in the Western Hemisphere, in the latter part of the seventeenth century. Of the forty-eight maps, thirteen are manuscripts... thirty-five are printed. A number are the earliest maps of certain English colonies.
