Includes Chronological List of Anton Tchekoff's Works [1887-1904]. Copy of William Lyon Phelps, 1865-1943, Lampson Professor of English Literature at Yale when he bought this copy new from Seven Gables on 23 Sept. 1912. He read it on the train on 8 March 1913, opening it as he went (some of the page edges are ragged, due no doubt to the bumpiness of rails between New York and New Haven) and commenting in broad marginal ink strokes and notes. Phelps's large bookplate, showing a library and the motto "Here Are God's Conduits", was designed by Connecticut artist and engraver William Fowler Hopson (1849-1935).
