Description:
An original publication, 1995. xx, 146 pp., illus., index This book is the result of research done by Ellen Clinkscales Smith Rippy on her Smith and Sullivan family lines. Much of her work on the Sullivan history was facilitated by research previously available from other members of the family on the Sullivans, Brownlees, Dunklins, Hueys, Walkers, Clinkscales, Moorheads, and Gilkeys. Research into the Smith line was made more difficult because of some apparent conflicts in the line of descent and a lack of availability of authentic records. But, she finally placed the Smiths on the Broad River at Smith's Ford, in Cherokee County. John Smith was buried on this land and information on his headstone indicated that he had been born in Botetourt County, Virginia. Further research established that John's father was Henry Smith who had come to South Carolina from the Upper Shenandoah Valley area of Virginia. From the Smith's Ford location in South Carolina, children would later move into Anderson County and…

Description:
Orig. pub. Richmond VA 1930. Reprinted 2002. Print on Demand Edition 2013. xviii, 644 pp., illus. In this extensive family history, the author tried to do more than write a mere record of births, deaths, and marriages. Working with wills, deeds, and biographical items, he endeavored to present a picture of an English family starting at the time of Domesday and following its fortunes to the 1930s. The Throckmorton family origins were at Throckmorton, Worcestershire, and they possessed land there that they had held at the time of the Norman Conquest. It is one of the Roman Catholic families of England but both John Throckmorton who settled in New England in 1631 and Robert Throckmorton who came to Virginia in 1637 were of the Protestant faith. Allied families include: Bynum, Besford, Wickliffe, Cocton, Brule´, Bonnycastle, Durvassal, Robinson, Spine, Olney, Pendleton, Vaulx, Barclay, Yates, Herbert, Blennerhassett, Woolley, Beckham, Courtney, Gifford, Louthe, Preston, Playter, Beaufo, Colston,…

Description:
Orig. pub. Spartanburg, SC 1928. Reprinted 1993. Print on Demand Edition 2018. (ii), 296 pp., frontis., new index Among the early settlers of Spartanburg County was the Wofford family. Some years prior to the Revolution, five brothers - William, Joseph, James, John, and Benjamin - came from Maryland and settled on the Tyger River in lower Spartanburg County. This history begins with excerpts from the minutes of the Wofford Memorial Association (1893-1914). Among those excerpts are historical sketches of the five brothers. Members of the Wofford family later migrated from Spartanburg County and are found in Tennessee, Mississippi, Missouri, Louisiana, Georgia, and Texas. The Rev. Benjamin Wofford, son of Capt. Joseph and Martha Llewellyn Wofford, who left $100,000 in 1850 to found Wofford College commands considerable treatment throughout the book. The early years of the college are also discussed. Brief sketches of other members of the family and their descendants include: Joseph Llewellyn Wofford,…

Description:
Orig. pub. Chattanooga and Bristol 1918-1933. Reprinted 1974. Print on Demand Edition 2012. Six volumes, 2,162 pp., illus. Available by individual volume. Begun in 1918 and not completed until 1933, Notable Southern Families is a collection of family histories touching upon many thousands of people of English, Scotch-Irish, and Huguenot stock, the three major groups of settlers in the Southern states, who emigrated first into Virginia, North and South Carolina, and Tennessee and then throughout the South. In almost every instance family lines begin with the earliest settlers in America and are brought down to the dates of publication. The compilers developed the lines after careful consideration of hundreds of histories, court records, family documents, family Bibles, and family authorities. The Colonial period, Revolutionary War, War of 1812, and Civil War record of each family is set forth succinctly. Each genealogy is meticulously developed giving all names in both collateral and direct lines of…

Description:
Orig. pub. New York 1901. Reprinted 1972, 1974. Print on Demand Edition 2021. (ii), 224 pp. + illus. In this classic of Loyalist literature, Elizabeth Lichtenstein Johnson (1764-1848) describes her life as daughter, wife, mother, and grandmother in Savannah, Canada, Britain, and the West Indies during the period 1764 -1837. Born near Savannah, she was the daugher of Russian emigrant John Lichtenstein. She married Dr. William Martin Johnston in Savannah. He was a member of one of Georgia's most prominent Loyalist families. In the early days of the Revolution, they left Georgia for British Halifax. He had fought for the King in New York and returned to Georgia with the British invasion of 1778. He and his men were involved in many of the battles of the Southern campaign and two of his brothers were killed in the war. Their father, Dr. Lewis Johnson, had been treasurer of the colony of Georgia and served on the Governor's Council. Surviving the siege of Savannah in 1779, Elizabeth Johnston spent many…

Description:
Orig. pub. 1983.. Print on Demand Edition 2015. Five volumes, 2000+ pages, illus. Available by volume. These four volumes of genealogies of South Carolina families are reprinted from past issues of the South Carolina Historical (and Genealogical) Magazine. Since the beginning of the magazine in 1900, approximately 2000 pages of carefully compiled family genealogies have appeared in the journal representing altogether 75 family history articles of an average length of 20-25 pages. Many of the articles are the work of A.S. Salley and Mabel Webber, both well known as genealogists and the first two editors (1900-1908, 1909-1941) of the magazine. Prior to this publication in 1983, these articles had never before been combined into book form. Many of the articles contain material on more than one family; thus, the decision was made that a new consolidated index was necessary. This every-name index contains approximately 30,000 individuals and 3000 families. Families who are the subject of separate…
