A large folio leaf from the incunable Latin Bible printed by Adolf Rusch, Strassburg, for Anton Koberger at Nuremburg, not before 1480. The leaf is from the Book of Job & measures 420 x 325 mm (16 ½ x 12 ¾ inches) printed in two columns, nicely hand rubricated with paragraph marks and initial letters in red. Small tears in lower margin with no loss. Fresh and very clean. See Goff, Incunabula in American Libraries (1964), item Goff B-607; ISTC ib00607000. ¶ Imprint as Sack (Freiburg) 656. Ascribed to the Basel press of Johann Amerbach by A. Hartmann (Amerbach-korrespondenz (1942), I, p. 2, n. 2). The bifolium measures 395 x 555 mm (15 ¾ x 21 ¾ inches) printed in black & red in four columns. Light staining to upper margins, still quite fresh & clean. Pages crisp, minor damp staining not affecting text. A decent and pleasing copy. Five Volumes in Two; contemporary half calf over decorated paste boards, the spines ruled and titled in gilt on labels, all page edges dyed red. 268 + 264 pp (Books One and Two in the first Volume); 276 + 235 + 176 (Books Three, Four and Five in the Second Volume). Title page of the first book printed in red & black. Ancient paper labels at head of spine panels with library numbers, a paper label over the gilt title label on the first volume with the numerals in ink atop the gilt, evidence of paper labels removed from near the spine feet, with some loss to the leather of Vol 2; Overall the bindings are sound and in excellent condition, the text is crisp and clean. An excellent set, all things considered.

Octavo, original publisher's full brown cloth heavily blocked in black & gilt on front panel, block in blind on rear cover. With 20 tipped in double-page maps [all maps are on guards and can be laid flat without loss], + 23 pp Index at rear. Yellow coated endpapers with publisher's advertising. The original owner (one S.P. Ambrose) has affixed his hand-written school schedule to the front paste-down, and written his name multiple times throughout the volume. Each map is titled in ink on the blank recto of the first leaf; one of the maps (England & Wales) is marked up in pencil; several blank leaves have the child's graffiti / drawings on them. Overall, the effect is quite charming. Being in use with children in British Private Schools, most copies would have perished; a rare survival. Spines faded and rubbed; light wear at edges; a very good set, tight and clean. ¶ Historical novel by Scott, published anonymously (as by the author of "Waverly, Kenilworth", &c). Set in London in either 1623 or 1624, it centres on the Scottish community there after the Union of the Crowns and features James VI and I. Scott's main sources were Jacobean dramas and other imaginative literature of the period, but he was also well acquainted with other contemporaneous publications and more recent studies. Page number (3) in ink to upper edge of verso; light browning. 80 mm (3-inch) closed tear to upper inner margin, with mild loss; very old (contemporary?) ink marginalia to outer margin on verso.
