Description:
New York: The Century Company, 1892. First Edition. Cloth. Near Fine/Very Good Plus. Oblong, 17 by 23.5 cm. ix, [1], 37 pages or leaves -- printing only on rectos of the narratives, or of the numerically paginated pages. A touch of Wain, perhaps, but here a host of other anthropomorphic animals -- owls, donkeys, bunnies, giraffes, even dogs! The drawings bear some resemblance to the nascent comic books enjoying their first mass circulation in the funny pages of newspapers of the day, with stories told over several "cells" often, these spread over the like number of pages. Also preserved is the dust jacket, one of the earliest with a pictorial image on its front and back, not to mention its spine, and the title and author's name on the front and spine. The book itself is generally clean and tight, with a few small and minor stains, none disconcerting. Endpapers have offsetting from the DJ. DJ has a two inch band of darkening on front right, aiwth some light scattered foxing, and minor chipping…

Description:
London and New Yorki: Castell Brothers, Ltd. and Frederick A. Stokes Company, respectively, 1909. Wraps (Moderately stiff card, twine or ...cord). Very Good. Delightful romp through the year with the mischievous wooden doll. Illustrations are deliciously bright and fun. 12mo. 14.5 by 12 cm. Unpaginated, 14 leaves. 13 chromolithographic plates, including one double paged. There is one single paged plate for each month. Made to look like a manuscript, as the general style of the Ainslie series. Thus printed captions could be mistaken easily, in a quick glance, for handwritten pencil, and the text throughout is rendered in a cursive. The numbered dates definitely can trick the eye into perceiving them as hand written as well. Uncommon -- three institutional copies of this year's Catherine Susan calendar evidenced on OCLC First Search -- Bryn Mawr, Princeton, Toronto. Cover with somewhat heavy staining. Small lower corner chip, and tiny amount of surface loss by upper spine. Leaves within…

Paris and Nancy: Berger-Levrault, 1915. Limited First Edition. Wraps. Very Good Plus. No. 169 of 208 limitation, and one of 200 copies on Arches paper. 4to. 26.5 by 20.5 cm. Charming children's book addressing the quotadien concerns of a child, with each plate touching on an issue or aspect of a child's world and thinking. An example is a segment that gently broaches the subject of death, in this case, of a Grandfather. Unpaginated, 16 leaves, with eight color pochoir plates, and other color vignettes and decoration, including the two rondel portraits on the front cover. Condition: a few stains on wrap covers but cumulatively, still a minor issue, in our view. A few darker stains on rear inside cover. Otherwise, quite clean, with signs of light use but nothing beyond that.

Description:
Asnières-sur-Seine: Boussod Valadon & Cie., 1886. First Edition Thus. Full Decorated Morocco. . Near Fine. Gorgeously bound, with exquisite illustrations most of which are lushly hand-colored -- they could pass as fully rendered watercolors done directly onto pages. Folio, 39 by 30 cm. Unpaginated, with text and illustrations on rectos only, with leaves of heavy card, bound in with tabs. 33 illustrations (aquarelles) of Beaumont are replicated in the two stories. Some illustrations remain in black and white, but most were hand-colored, and to a high level. Crimson morocco decorated with gilt borders featuring various floreate decorations and lattice work, Rococo in sensibility yet symmetrical. Silk pastedown endpapers. Note that the colophon, in the back, states the book was created or finished off in December 1886 but the spine gives the publication date as 1887. Both dates are surely accurate. Condition: A few small spots of soil on the morocco. Light scattered soiling and/or foxing…

Description:
Oldenburg: Nürnberger Bilderbücherverlag Gerhard Stalling, 1926. With original box! Hardcover. Cloth. Paper pastedown on front board. . Very Good. With original dust jacket and box surviving. Scarce in any form, with a single institutional copy showing on OCLC First Search, in Leipzig, of this children's tale of the circus' annual visit to town! N.d., but based 1926 on single institutional listing on OCLC. With 46 cut-out figures, a dozen of which were never fully cut to shape. The book has by our count 55 slots to slip these pieces, so we would assume we are missing a few of the pieces, but we would also note that the one institutional copy has a mere 20 of the pieces. Although the publisher refers to Nuremberg in its business name, the book was published in Oldenburg, which is in Northern Germany. Oblong 4to, 28 by 33.5 cm. Unpaginated, 14 pages of internal bright illustrations containing slots for the numerous cut-out figures, which could be people or objects. Condition: box lid…

London: Vol. 1: J. Tonson and J. Watts. Vol. 2: J. and P. Knapton. , 1727, 1738. First Editions. Full Calf. Slipcase: Quarter Morocco. Two chemises: cloth. . Very Good. 4to. 26 by 20 cm. [14], 173, [9], 155 pp. Armorial bookplates of Bradby-Hall. Both volumes with considerable wear to calf binding, with some scratches, rubbing of joints, etc. Vol. 1 with some rippling of leaves, and scattered soiling, but never in our view disconcerting or problematic. Vol. 2 blank leaves in front and back chewed along edges. Also rippling and minor soil -- overall, other than blanks, a fresher looking volume than the first. Chemises with ribbon pulls. No issues with chemises. Slipcase has a few minor gouges on morocco, but overall solid, slipcase, and one with an attractive shelf presence. Gilt dating on the slipcase gives the date of the first volume erroneously as 1737, when in fact it was 1727.

New York: Henry Holt and Company, 1940. First American Edition. Cloth. Near Fine. Funny, funny, funny! With delightful illustrations. 4to. 28 by 20.5 cm. 92, [1] pp. The translator, Rosemary Benet, was the wife of poet Stephen Vincent Benet, and was also an author in her own right. The lightest of wear to the book itself -- light wear of blue fabric in corners and spine tips, and gentle age toning of leaves. The dust jacket has minor close tears and shallow edge chipping, with some light soiling, flattened creasing, etc. Dust jacket now protected with mylar. About as nice a copy overall as one is likely to come by.

Paris: Boivin & Cie., 1909. 1st Edition. Cloth. Very Good. Toudouze, G. Gustave. Folio, 37 by 30 cm. 80, [2] pp. Charismatic color illustrated front cover, with lavish use of gilt impressed into cloth, and rich greens and reds of king's costume such as one would find in a painting of the early Renaissance. Lavish color illustrations, generally full page every other page, by Robida, of the larger-than-life Gallic Renaissance king, remembered for waging war nearly non-stop, for having welcomed Leonardo da Vinci to his protection, for having acquired the Mona Lisa from da Vinci, and perhaps most of all, as an ambitious builder, most notably, of Chambord, the immense palatial confection that is a riot of towers, crockets and turrets in the Loire Valley, and also the largest royal palace, based on square footage, in France -- larger than Versailles based on this criterion. Condition: Light soiling of the gray cloth here and there, especially by rear joint. Some cloth blistering, most pronounced by front…

Amsterdam: F.J. Weygand. Booklet: wraps, and slipcase of heavy card. Fine. N.d., circa 1830. An engraved card globe in six hand-colored sections which when manipulating the moving slide cords attached at the top and bottom will transform the pieces into a globe. Scarce, with only institutional copy appearing on OCLC First Search at Newberry. The accompany explanatory 10 page booklet, 18.5 by 12 cm, describes the earth, its axes, the equinoxes, the tropics, solstices, the continents, etc. It also contains two color plates addressing astronomy and the zodiac. The globe, 16 cm in height when flattened, 37 cm in circumference when fully formed, is in fine condition, with all strings present and the six segments attached to one another properly. We are reluctant to transform the flat pieces into the fully three dimensional globe less we incur and damage to the delicate piece, but one can clearly do this with care. There is trivial rubbing to the edges of the slipcase. Some light wear along the…

Description:
Very Good. N.d., circa 1940. 9 page story. The story is told in quasi-black dialect, and there is probably a racist dimension to the story involving a black family, although the author may not have had an invidious intent at the time. While the illustrations are a bit crude, and possibly deliberately so, the author does have a comedic spark, notwithstanding the offense someone might take to it. Certainly an interesting relic from an era when there were no inhibitions with regard to stereotyping.

London: Tilt & Bogue, 1843. Leporello. Card. Cloth spine.. Very Good. A novel and fun panorama. Closed, oblong, 8.5 by 24 cm, and its seven panels within are stretchable to 157.5 cm, or about 1.5 meters. Unusual rendering of first four lines of nursery rhyme in five languages besides English --- French, Hebrew, Latin, Greek and German. Supposedly another edition of this, issued by the same publisher, also featured Italian, absent here, and perhaps the entirety of verse also in French. The whole verse runs as an upper caption for the panorama. Front board is foxed and soiled. The backs of four folds discreetly reinforced. Scattered light soiling to the panels, but overall bright and vivid.
