Description:
London: Frank Cass and Co Limited, 1973. With the original Foreword by Sir Dennis H. Robertson and a new preface by the author. The period 1890 - 1915 in the history of British economic thought may aptly be described as the age of Marshall: his influence as a teacher, and his ideas as presented in " The Principles of Economics " (1890) and other writings, stimulated and often dominated the ideas and writings of the younger economists of the period. His ideas also provided a theoretical basis for increasing state intervention in the economic life of the community in Britain, and thus helped the Liberal government of the country lay the foundations of the welfare state. Dr. Jha here evaluates the contributions made by the younger contemporaries of Marshall to four major aspects of economic thought : international trade, the labour question, economics of poverty and welfare, and public finance. The study is primarily concerned with the contributions made by these economists through "…

Description:
London: Frank Cass and Co Limited, 1889. Frederick Stanley Arnot's stature as a missionary pioneer has not been dimmed by the passage of time. His interest in Africa was stimulated directly by Livingstone, and when he sets out from Scotland in 1881 to take the gospel to Africa, he was consciously seeking to emulate the work so nobly begun by his predecessor. He was the first missionary to settle within the modern confines of Zambia and Katanga, thus opening up the interior of Africa to Christian evangelism. By his activities in Britain and South Africa, as well as by his journeyings into the interior, he played a large part in determining the nature and direction of the Christian initiative in Central Africa. Arnott's published writings were compiled directly from diaries and letters, and consequently they contain graphic accounts of the life of a missionary pioneer during the opening up of Central Africa. They provide an unrivaled record of both the trivia and the drama of the daily…

Description:
London: Frank Cass and Co Limited, 1963. Leaving aside the early manorial and municipal regulations, the Webs take up their subject with the introduction of national measures at the close of the 15th-century. They show that the regulation of traffic, from the first, was not based on any abstract theory, but on the practical necessities of the state. The legislators dealt with liquor traffic as an enemy of social peace. But these efforts were constantly thwarted by its value as a source of revenue, and the governmental policy of encouraging the great brewing and distilling industries. Under James 1 an elaborate system of strict control was developed, but at the end of the 17th century a General laxness set in and justices began to the neglect their duty. Drunkenness increase enormously and the government encouraged the liquor industry by several favorable statutes. The ensuing excesses caused a reaction and in 1729 and 1736 parliament adopted a strong restrictive policy of high license and heavy…
