Oxford Bibliographical Society, Oxford, first edition, 1995. Illustrated laminated wrappers, 4to, 26 cm,. xiii, 176 pp, 71 ills (some in colour). From the introduction: "The aim of the present publication is to document how Oxford's library collections have been housed over the ages and to illustrate this from the many surviving features which can still be seen in various buildings today. To understand how study and storage systems have evolved will assist a comprehension of a rich but complex information resource, encourage a better appreciation of this great heritage, and allow the very considerable problems which its conservation raises to be seen in their historical context. The long timespan of Oxford's libraries, like that of its other buildings and its gardens, presents a living museum where those fortunate enough to frequent these places, even for a short time, can see and understand something of the way in which, over the years, forces, intellectual, artistic, technical and… Read More

Aidan Ellis, Henley-on-Thames, first edition, 1991. Cloth, 4to,. 175 pp, over 120 ills (89 in colour),. From the blurb: "At the heart of the mediaeval University city of Oxford lies its famous library, the Bodleian, with its own continuous history of over five hundred years. Into its range of buildings, unequalled anywhere for their beauty and dignity, have been gathered over he centuries great collections incorporating many of the monuments of human learning and literature, not only those of the British Isles and Western Europe generally but also from the ancient cultures of the East and the Americas. The Bodleian is not only a grand treasure-house of the past, attracting scholars from all parts; it is also a vast and ever-growing library which can seat daily over 2,000 readers and has an annual intake of books from all over the world which requires over a mile and a half of new shelving each year. Oxford Bibliographical Society, Oxford, first edition, 1983. Cloth-backed boards, 8vo, 24 cm,. xiv, 199 pp. From the introduction: "When Sir Thomas Bodley died on 28 January 1612/13 the library which he had established for the University of Oxford became for the first time the direct responsibility of the University authorities. Until then Bodley had borne all the financial burden and had been personally responsible for appointing a Librarian and directing the general lines of development. From the opening of the library in 1602 to Bodley's death in 1613 there are no surviving records of library finance and administration other than Bodley's illuminating correspondence with his librarian, Thomas James,1 and with the University.2 For the next thirty or forty years the record which throws direct light on the general administration of the Library is the official account book of which the entries for the years 1613 to 1646 are printed here. Description:
Clarendon Press, first edition, 1983. Cloth, 8vo, 23 cm,. 139 pp, 16 pp of plates. The Bodleian Library was founded in 1602, to serve the University of Oxford and the whole republic of learning: until the foundation of the British Museum in the mid-eighteenth century it was the premier scholarly library of the English-speaking world. The present work, given as the Lyell Lectures at Oxford in 1981, traces the Library's uninterrupted development during the first two centuries of its existence. It is the first such history to be published since W. D. Macray's Annals of the Bodleian Library (1890). Drawing on previously unpublished University and Library records, and taking notice of the contributions to Library history made by scholars since Macray, the book presents a balanced account of the Library's growth, and of the often remarkable individuals - both benefactors and Librarians - who left the stamp of their personalities on it by their contributions to the wealth and character of its… Read More
