According to the Encyclopedia of Library and Information Science, the Catalogue of the Printed Books "was reputed to be the first true dictionary catalog; it used the duplicate entry approach within a single alphabet, including catchword or subject word for anonymous works as well as for those the authors of which were known. This practice, however, was followed to a limited extent in the Philadelphia Association Library Company Catalogue of 1765.
