Kraus Reprint Corporation, [New York], 1963 reprint of 1870-1871 edition. 2 vols, cloth, 4to,. iv, 446 + 554 pp. 1809 + 1810-4173 entries. This set comprises the 2 volumes of Part III, covering the 18th century books. . From the introduction: "For the 18th Century imprints, the important period of late colonial times and the American Revolution, the only chronological list of the John Carter Brown Library is still the Third Part of John Russell Bartlett's first catalogue, which we are now reprinting. The fifty copies originally printed have almost all disappeared and the Union Catalog at the Library of Congress indicates that less than five copies are located in American libraries. The present reprint edition was made from the copy in the New York Public Library. The handwritten annotations were made by the eminent bibliographer, Wilberforce Eames, one-time Lenox Librarian, who continued Sabin's bibliography. Covers slightly rubbed, slightly bumped at head and tail of spines, otherwise…

[Privately printed], London, first edition, 1888. Quarter-morocco and Roxburghe boards with gilt rule, marbled endpapers, 4to,. [1], 199, 3, [1] pp. From The Library, Volume 2, 1890: "Mr. Gibbs has recently distributed to his friends and fellow members of the Roxburghe Club, copies of the very handsomely printed catalogue of the libraries at St. Dunstan's, Regent's Park and at Aldenham House. Mr. Gibbs's collections are rich in Bibles and Liturgies and in works relating to Charles I. They contain also a goodly array of first editions of English classics, which have been wisely supplemented by the reprints of Prof. Arber, Dr. Grosart and other industrious editors. As the catalogue is privately printed we have no right to subject it to minute criticism. We may note, however, that while each individual title appears to have been written with considerable care, for lack of a little editing the inconsistency of the headings is quite glaring." From the preface: "In…

Description:
Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, first edition, 1982. Cloth, 4to, 32 cm,. xiv, 599 pp, 1 plate. From the blurb: "There was certainly a collection of books at Lincoln Cathedral in the twelfth century, and its origins were perhaps earlier still; but little interest seems to have been taken in building up the library until the second half of the seventeenth century, with the appointment in 1660 of the bibliophile Michael Honywood, a Fellow of Christ's College, Cambridge, as Dean. The present Wren Library's collection of some 8,000 printed books is based largely on his private library, bequeathed to the Dean and Chapter of Lincoln on his death in 1681. Much of Honywood's library was put together during seventeen years of voluntary exile in the Low Countries from 1643. It is consequently rich in sixteenth- and seventeenth- century continental literature, including rare Italian plays, European pamphlets and broadsides interpreting the English political situation, a collection of…

Printed by Bensley and Son, London, first edition, 1816. Plain wrappers, edges untrimmed, 4to, 29 cm. 260, [2], 92 pp. Uncommon. The catalogue of printed books was prepared by Nicholas Carlisle and that of Manuscripts by Henry Ellis. According to the Encyclopedia of Library and Information Science, the Catalogue of the Printed Books "was reputed to be the first true dictionary catalog; it used the duplicate entry approach within a single alphabet, including catchword or subject word for anonymous works as well as for those the authors of which were known. This practice, however, was followed to a limited extent in the Philadelphia Association Library Company Catalogue of 1765. Library label on front inside wrapper, wrappers worn and chipped with loss of a piece from the rear wrapper, most of spine-panel lost, several corners dog-eared, faint waterstaining to lower foredge corners of first few leaves, contents otherwise Good.

Oxford University Press, London, first edition, 1969. 3 vols, cloth, 4to, 26 cm,. xci, 479 + v, 565 + v, 542 pp. 4,019 entries. From a contemporary review: "These volumes set a high mark in the study of provenance. The particular achievement is to put into print an admirably informative reconstruction of Horace Walpole's Library. Walpole gathered some 7300 volumes (7000 titles) at Strawberry Hill.. In just over 4000 catalogue-entries (i.e., short titles of works and working titles of collections), Professor Hazen identifies almost all the original contents of the library by title, and determines the physical arrangement of the volumes on Walpole's shelves.. He traces some 1400 volumes (3000 titles) to their present locations. ..As part of the introductory material, the Catalogue prints a revision of Mr Lewis's out-of-print Sandars Lectures of 1957. In these lectures Lewis described Walpole's literary interests, and sketched Walpole's activities with respect to his…
