Description:
G. K. Hall & Co., Boston, first edition, 1977. Cloth, folio, 36 cm,. xvii, 587 pp, the catalogue reproducing 21 catalogue cards per page,. A catalogue reproducing the library catalogue cards From the introduction - "The Newberry Library has what is considered to be one of the most important music collections in the United States, particularly rich in the fields of Renaissance music, early theory, and Americana. As a privately endowed research library with strong bibliophilic interests, it has naturally built its collections to serve historical scholarship. Indicative of this strength is the fact that nearly 10 per cent of its cataloged music collection predates 1861. The post-1860 materials in the Library make up a valuable working reference collection, besides containing a number of valuable and important items; but it is clearly the early material which makes the Library an outstanding one for the music scholar. Thus the present volume - the first extensive published catalog devoted to… Read More

Description:
American Folklore Society, Philadelphia, first edition, 1954. Cloth, 8vo,. xiii, 145 pp. 3,437 entries. The bibliography covers books and articles to about 1950. Entries are arranged alphabetically by author, and coded into 32 categories. There is a subject index, basd on these categories, and a further index to articles from individual periodicals. There is an Appendix of Jazz magazines many already defunct by the time the bibliography appeared). From the introduction: "The literature of jazz is as varied and exciting as the music itself, for not only has a group of competent critics grown up around the idiom but it has been, since the 20's, traditionally fair game for any writer with paper and an outlet for his self-expression. A critical look at this literature reveals much that is shoddy, poorly written and poorly conceived, and yet much that brings an understanding not only of the music but of the cultural milieu in which it has functioned for so many years. The cycles of change in… Read More

Description:
Trustees of the British Museum, London, first edition, 1951. Cloth, 4to, 29 cm,. 438 pp. Approximately 9,000 entries. From the preface: "The Hirsch Library was acquired by the British Museum in 1946.. While many of the rarest and most important musical compositions were included in Vols. Ii, iii and iv of the catalogues issued by Mr. Hirsch himself, it is not generally known that these amounted to barely one-third of the total amount of music in his library. The remainder included over 300 additional vocal scores, of which 150 were of Mozart operas; about 2,000 miscellaneous works of the late 18th and of the 19th and 20th centuries, including orchestral scores, chamber music, reprints and facsimiles ; and smaller, but notable, collections of the first and early editions of Marschner, Loewe, Berlioz, Liszt, Johann Strauss (father and son), Lanner, Brahms and Sterndale Bennett. There was also a large number of 19th-century French, German and English popular songs with pictorial title-pages.… Read More

Description:
D. S. Brewer, Cambridge, first edition, 1989. Cloth, gilt cover device, folio,. ix, 26, 67, xii, 45 pp. The subjects covered in this volume represent three of Pepys's strongest interests. (1) The music collection consists of seventy volumes, chiefly of vocal and instrumental music representative of the tastes and interests of the amateur. It ranges from psalm-books to operas, and the composers inlude Henry Lawes, Finger, Grabu, A. Scarlatti and Purcell. Pepys was a musician as well as a music lover, and collected treatises on the subject of musical theory (e.g. by Mersenne and Kircher) and items of historical interest. (2) The voluminous map collection, with only few exceptions, was a by-product of Pepys's work at the Admiralty and was made for use. Hence its concentration on material related to navigation. Contained in a variety of formats — as separate maps and charts, atlases, books of travel and topography, and manuscript journals of naval commanders — its size and… Read More

Bibliographical Society, London, first edition, 1997. Cloth, 8vo, 26 cm,. xlix, 521 pp, plates. From the introduction: "This bibliography offers descriptions of almost 2000 issues of secular vocal music published in England 1703-1726, including works by Giovanni Bononcini, Henry Purcell, John Weldon, Attilio Ariosti and Richard Leveridge. The only exclusions are 'reprints' or subsequent volumes of books first published before 1703, books comprising solely the work of Handel, and the issues of the Monthly Mask of Vocal Music. The book indexes 2296 song first lines. The books described here represent the first extended effort to issue entirely commercial printed versions of musical stage works and they are also the first song books to be printed by engraving on a systematic basis. The book is a sequel to Day and Murrie's English Song Books 1651-1702, published by the Bibliographical Society in 1940, and augments David Foxon's English Verse 1701-1750.
