Published for the Bibliographical Society of the University of Virginia [by] the University Press of Virginia, first edition, 1967. American Printing. Decorated cloth and cloth boards, 8vo, 27 cn,. xii, 189, [1] pp, 24 plates. From the preface: "This volume describes the condition of the American printer during the years 1787 to 1825, his methods of work, the equipment he used, and the policies by which he conducted his business. He lived in a hard and critical time which demanded of him extraordinary stamina and versatility for survival; and he insisted on surviving. A practical realist, he saw the output of his printing press as a primary tool in the building of a new country. The fact that he had under his control the chief means of communication brought him pride in his craft, and he regarded his craft as a high profession. He was a formidable man; he loved his country simply and openly and believed that he was the equal of anyone. He knew the distress of the small businessman; often he did…

Tradition Press, Hatboro, 1967 reprint of 1924 first edition. Cloth, 8vo,. xv, [1], 324 pp. From the introduction: "Hardly anything is more fascinating than to pick up a volume of the printed Transcripts of the Stationers' Registers and to skim through the pages to see what our forefathers read.. During the first twenty or thirty years in which the Registers were kept, ballads indeed made up the bulk of the entries; until 1640 they occupied perhaps greater space than books or plays. But from 1640 to 1655, thanks to civil war and restrictive laws, almost no ballads were registered at Stationers' Hall. A similar gap appears from 1656 (when some 165 ballads were entered) to 1675 (when some 175 were entered); and from 1676 to 1708/9 - the date at which the Registers were discontinued - ballad-entries were rarely made. It has long amused me to skim through these entries and to attempt to identify them. The results ..are now presented in the form of an index to all the ballad-entries made at…

From the blurb: "Anatomy of Printing is a detailed analysis of the various factors in art and history that have affected the design of the printed page. John Lewis describes the conditions of Western Europe that led to the development of a universal script and to the invention of the printing press and movable typesetting. He traces the work and lives of various printers and the development of the craft as a medium of communication from the time of Gutenberg's experiments with the adjustable typemould and the modified wine press of the Rhine vineyards to modern computerized typesetting and the web-fed multi-colour offset press. The constantly changing social, political, economic and artistic backgrounds are considered in some detail by the author, who shows how the printing press, as well as being a disseminator of ideas, has…

Blandford Press, London, first edition, 1966. Cloth, cover illustration, large 8vo, 25 cm,. xix, 315 pp, ills, maps. From the blurb: "In the literature dealing with the history of printing and its allied trades, there are few subjects that have not been exhaustively treated. There did, however, seem to be a need for a record of the major landmarks in the development of printing from its inception to the present day. From the myriad details and dates of some five centuries, there could be compiled a work of many volumes: the strength and the value of ANNALS OF PRINTING lies in its selection of salient information into one compact volume. The work has been achieved by the collaboration of two authorities: W. Turner Berry, who has written and edited several books during bis long years as the Librarian of the St Bride Institute in London, and who has brought his great experience to bear in treating the period from 1800 to the present time; and H. Bibliographical Society, London, reprinted from the Transactions of the Bibliographical Society, 1924. Small edition of perhaps 20 - 30 copies. Printed wrappers, small 4to, 23 cm,. 37 pp. Uncommon separate printing: from 1894 twenty copies of any paper printed in the Transactions were presented to the writer, and presumably a few more were run off. From the text: "In the title of this paper as given on the card of the Society's meetings its subject was described as border-pieces', an expression the meaning of which is perhaps somewhat vague. Had I been sure that I should be understood I should have preferred to call the paper English compartments to 1640' using compartments ' in the somewhat odd sense which seems to have been introduced by Ames in his Typo¬graphical Antiquities of 1749, and which is now, I think, definitely recognized by most bibliographers.. as meaning any ornamental frame for a printed page, whether of one piece or of several belonging…
