Description:
Privately published, Oslo, first edition, 1969. Limited to 800 copies, of which 500 were for sale. Cloth, large 8vo,. lxviii, 455 pp. 1,368 entries. Built up over half a century, the aim of this great collection was "to bring together as many editions, impressions, issues and states as possible of each book or pamphlet in any way relating to, or printed in, French Polynesia.....The Kroepelien collection is to a Pacific student what, for example, the Waller collection in Uppsala is to a student of the history of medicine."- Introduction. The catalogue selects approximately one-third of the collection (aiming for completeness in certain areas, including bibliography, narratives of certain voyages, and pre-1835 Polynesian imprints) and annotates, often extensively, the items described with full bibliographic information. From a contemporary review: " This sumptuous volume, beautifully printed and bound.. lists alphabetically 1,368 works arranged by author, as well as numerous other… Read More

Description:
Francis Edwards Ltd, London, second edition, 1952. Limited edition of 500 copies, of which 425 were for sale. Cloth, 8vo,. 103 pp, 11 plates. 161 entries. From a contemporary review: "This bibliography, the first edition of which was published in 1936, lists 161 items divided into two sections. In the first section, comprising primary material chosen for its 'importance, interest or rarity', title-pages are transcribed in detail, and full collations and bibliographical identifications are supplied. The second section, in which the bibliographical description is more summary, contains 'a highly selective list of less important or more modern books and pamphlets', and forms a Cook allusion book of special interest since the bibliography of a man of action necessarily includes more written about him than by him. The arrangement within each section is chronological, and two indexes (absent from the first edition) enable items to be found without difficulty. Covers rubbed, endpapers… Read More

Description:
Sotheby & Co., London, auction catalogue for the sales held on 7th June and 9th November 1971. Yellow printed wrappers, 8vo,. 106 + 161 pp, plates (some folding). 366 lots. From the foreword to the first part of the sale: "The richness of the collection and the fastidiousness with which it has been assembled were both made possible by the quality of the material which became available during the period of the great Britwell, Leconfield and Lothian dispersals. ..Dealing with a comparatively short period of time during which Europeans reached almost every corner of the globe, the collection demonstrates in particular the impact of all this activity on Tudor and early Stuart England. At first it was by means of translations from the Spanish, Portuguese and Italian, and secondhand reports, sometimes incredulous; but many of the important English contributions to the subject, which are present here, show how very quickly the commercial and political implications were realised, and how the seizing… Read More
