Barbara Bush is certainly among the most popular First Ladies ever to live in the White House. Politics aside, people worldwide have come to admire her wit, her candor and compassion, as well as her unswerving devotion to her husband and children. In her memoir, Mrs. Bush for the first time gives readers a very private look at a life lived in the public eye for more than twenty-five years. She begins with a compelling portrait of her early years, including: growing up in Rye, New York, and meeting George Bush; life as a young bride and mother, moving far away from home to West Texas; and the almost. Knopf, First Edition, First Printing, 2004. Knopf, First Edition, First Printing, 06/22/2004. Navy Blue paper over boards, gold lettering. NEAR MINT/NEAR MINT. President Bill Clinton's My Life is the strikingly candid portrait of a global leader who decided early in life to devote his intellectual and political gifts, and his extraordinary capacity for hard work, to serving the public. It shows us the progress of a remarkable American, who, through his own enormous energies and efforts, made the unlikely journey from Hope, Arkansas, to the White House-a journey fueled by an impassioned interest in the political process which manifested itself at every stage of his life: in college, working as an intern for Senator William Fulbright; at Oxford, becoming part of the Vietnam War protest movement; at Yale Law School, campaigning on the grassroots level for Democratic candidates; back in Arkansas, running for Congress, attorney general, and governor. We see his career shaped by his resolute determination…

Simon & Schuster, New York, 1987. Simon & Schuster, New York (Jan 1987). Gray paper over boards, navy blue, cloth spine, gold lettering. Very Good/Very good. The Fitzgeralds and the Kennedys is one of the richest works of biography in the last decade. From the wintry day in 1863 when John Francis Fitzgerald was baptized, through the memorable moment ninety-eight years later when his grandson and namesake John Fitzgerald Kennedy was inaugurated as President of the United States, the author brings us every colorful inch of this unique American tapestry. Each character emerges unmistakably, with the clarity and complexity of personal recollection: "Honey Fitz" Fitzgerald, the mayor of Boston and founder of his dynasty; his independent and shrewdly political daughter, Rose, and her husband, the cunning, manipulative Joseph P. Kennedy; finally, the "Golden trio" of Kennedy children--Joe Jr., Kathleen, and Jack--whose promise was eclipsed by the greater power of fate. With unprecedented access to the…

Offenses by officials also include ordinary crimes, but perhaps with different standards of proof and punishment than for non officials, on the grounds that more is expected of officials by their oaths of office. Yellow paper over boards, black cloth spine, gold lettering. MINT/MINT. Many pictures color and B/W. As Margaret Truman knows from firsthand experience, living in the White House can be exhilarating and maddening, alarming and exhausting-but it is certainly never dull. Part private residence, part goldfish bowl, and part national shrine, the White House is both the most important address in America and the most intensely scrutinized. In this splendid blend of the personal and historic, Margaret Truman offers an unforgettable tour of "the president's house" across the span of two centuries. Opened (though not finished) in 1800 and originally dubbed a "palace," the White House has been fascinating from day one. In Thomas Jefferson's day, it was a reeking construction site where congressmen complained of the hazards of open rubbish pits.…

After winning the presidency by a razor-thin victory on November 8, 1960 over Richard Nixon, Dwight D. Eisenhower's former vice president, John F. Kennedy became the thirty-fifth president of the United States. But beneath the stately veneers of both Ike and JFK, there was a complex and consequential rivalry. In Rising Star, Setting Sun, John T. Shaw focuses on the intense ten-week transition between JFK's electoral victory and his inauguration on January 20, 1961. In just over two months, America would transition into a new age, and nowhere was it more marked that in the generational and personal difference between these two men and their dueling visions for the country they led. The former general espoused frugality, prudence, and stewardship. The young political wunderkid embodied dramatic themes and sweeping…

Description:
This carries on the autobiography begun in This Is My Story, published in 1937, and carrying her life up to her husband's election as Governor of New York. There has been eager curiosity-and some concern- about the possible revelations this second volume (which ends with his death) might make. Reading the script convinces this reader, at least, that its popularity will rest, not on such revelations (for actually there are none of anything other than human values)- but on the sheer simplicity and bigness of the woman herself. Even her detractors, if they approach the book objectively, will have to confess that many of the fantastic criticisms to which she has been subjected collapse before the honest analysis of her relations to her job as the wife of a president who was unable to cover all the areas of human contact his role dictated. Mrs. Roosevelt, without too obviously setting herself the task of correcting misapprehensions, almost naively reveals the reasons for her incessant journeyings- and what…
