Description:
Paris: Chez De Hansy le jeune, 1774 A very good copy in newer full morocco binding with fold out map by Robert de Vaugondy. M. de Freville was a teacher, who wrote a variety of works, including for children. This book is notable in that it gives one of the first accounts in French of Cook's 1st voyage in the Endeavour, 1768-71. The bindings have raised bands and gilt titles and dates to spines. They are in near fine condition. The endpapers are marbled in a near match for the original marbling on the page edges. New blanks have been inserted at front and rear. Vol I: half title (giving the alternative 'Hydrographie...as the title); title page with 2 ink signatures across the lower half (the ink is visible to verso); Preface v-xlviii; fold out map; text with decorative headpiece and tailpieces pp 1-518; Index 519-522; errata. Vol I is in very good clean condition with the occasional light mark. There is some worming to the top margin - mainly affecting pp 157-208; and less so pp 217-228. At… Read More

Description:
Edinburgh: Printed by Neill & Co, not printed for sale, 1831 An extremely scarce original copy in contemporary full leather binding. According to the 'Preliminary Statement' in the book, it arose from a meeting in April 1831, where a 'few young gentlemen, natives of Orkney', agreed that while there was a lot of interest and value attached to antiquities in Orkney and Zetland, very little was published or known. The book proposed setting up a Society - possibly called 'The Orkney and Zetland Statistical Society'. The rest of work pulls together extracts from other works, lists prominent individuals, and gives a listing of works on Orkney and Zetland at that period. This copy has been repaired to provide a new leather spine with gilt titles. The contemporary boards have a delicate blind stamped leaf design to the borders. There is a little scuffing and wear but the binding is in very good clean condition. There are marbled endpapers with professional tape at the joints… Read More

Description:
Washington: U S Department of Agriculture, 1893 A good copy of the 1st edition in the original cloth binding with 26 coloured plates. The binding is sound and bright with gilt titles to spine and textured cloth boards. There is some pulling to spine ends and light wear to corners. The back board has 4 tiny spot marks and a slightly paler area at the top close to the spine. The contents are complete with 26 coloured plates as per the plate listing (which places plate 26 before plates 24 and 25). The text paper and endpapers are lightly toned and there is some spotting to the foredge which is occasionally visible internally at the page edge - including plate pages. The plates are tissue-guarded - the guard to plate 9 has small loss from a side edge. There is small stain at the bottom gutter edge which is visible at the rear endpapers and on plates 1, 24 and 25. This does not affect the images. A sliver of text surface from p 96 has attached itself to the back of plate 14 - this affects some words but it… Read More

Description:
Antverpiae [Antwerp]: Ex officina Christophori Plantini Architypographi Regii, 1580 An extremely scarce original copy in soft cover vellum binding, printed and published by Christopher Plantin and with his printer's device on the title page. This work is a contemporary account of events in the Netherlands during the period of armed rebellion against the rule of Philip II of Spain and its subsequent repression. The activities of Mathias (Holy Roman Emperor), who was invited to be Governor of the Netherlands in 1577, in promoting a Catholic revival have been said to be contributory to the Thirty Years War. The work was edited by Aggaeus Van Albada, an extremely able who was principal speaker for the Netherlands at the peace talks that followed the rebellion. Christopher Plantin, whose major printing house was in Antwerp, suffered personally in the conflict - only saving his business from destruction by paying ransoms to the Spanish soldiers. This copy is in a full vellum soft binding. The boards… Read More

Description:
Albany: Weed, Parsons & Company, public printers, 1850 An interesting copy of the Revised Edition, in half leather binding by George Zabriskie, and with his inscription internally. George Albert Zabriskie (1868-1954) was a very keen collector of books and art, and took this interest further into 'finishing' book bindings - many completed as gifts. This volume has an inscription at the first initial blank: 'To Edward with the best wishes of his old brother "the finisher" George June 3/51'. The binding is in morocco leather with gilt compartments to the spine - one of which has the volume title. The remainder have a Native American head; hunting equipment; a deer head; a bird; and a horse head in gilt. There is a gilt cat head and a mouse on the leather at the front board. Boards and endpapers are marbled and there are internal gilt dentelles with GAZ at the bottom of the front pastedown. Internal gilt decoration to board corners. The binding is very clean with light wear to corners and edges and light… Read More

Packed with articles, letters and notes on developments in agriculture, estate management, roads and vehicles in Britain and elsewhere at the beginning of the nineteenth century. Numerous plates of estate plans, machinery, cottage styles, boundary styles etc. Interesting to note that this is contemporary with Jane Austen and provides a detailed background to the management of the great estates and the roads and means of transport referred to in her work. The bindings have raised bands with gilt lining to spine and red title labels. Vol I has a volume label; the remaining 3 have lost theirs. The corners look to be reinforced with a form of parchment. Edinburgh: Macredie, Skelly, and Company, Princes Street; and T & C Underwood, London, 1822 A rare 1st edition copy of Alex Peterkin's studies of Orkney and Zetland. The title page states that this is Vol I, but no further volumes were published. The work is in 3 parts: A Visit to Orkney in 1818, A Chronicle of Orkney and Zetland, and the Political State of Orkney and Zetland. Peterkin lived in Orkney for 7 years and held the title of Sheriff-Substitute of Orkney. He states that he wrote the work because he found other studies - those by James Wallace and the Rev Dr Barry - 'unsatisfactory in many important particulars'. He was taken to task by Rev Walter Traill for this publication - with Traill accusing him of getting his facts wrong while strongly defending the accuracy of Dr Barry. This copy is in a new half leather binding with title labels and date in gilt, and gilt-lined raised bands to spine. The boards are marbled. The binding is in near fine clean condition. Description:
London: Thomas Mc Lean A good copy of the 2nd edition - undated but circa 1830 - with 50 hand coloured engravings. It is in a late nineteenth century binding with half leather and marbled boards. There is some fraying and loss at the top of the spine and wear to the front spine joint, with some splitting at the top. The bottom spine end has some rubbing and there is wear to edges and corners. Internally there is a small ownership label to the front endpaper and a pencil note on the initial blank. This tells the sad tale of how the book was given to the owner in 1879 but in a horrible accident involving several books, it got left out in the weather. The newer binding is likely to be down to this incident. There is an insert detailing the gift which was from the then Chief Constable of Manchester. Contents: frontispiece; title; plate list; 49 further plates with accompanying text pages. There is some spotting to the bottom outer corners of initial and final pages - affecting the frontispiece and plates… Read More
