Light staining to the covers, but a remarkably uncommon and equally curious little volume. OCLC identifies only five copies in institutional holdings (OCLC 20039123) as well as another 1854 New Hampshire imprint which is even more uncommon.

Folio. 54, [2] pp. Limited edition, number XI of 75 Roman numeral copies, signed by the Leonard Bahr, the printer. As issued, quarter bound in vellum with marbled paper over boards; spine titled in gold; printed in black with running headers in blue and red. The edition includes two leaves from the Doves Press, one quarto leaf from Paradise Lost printed on vellum as well a folio leaf from the book of Esther from the Doves Press Bible printed on paper. A bright, fresh copy, complete with mounted photograph of Emery Walker and T. J. Cobden-Sanderson along with the pamphlet, "A Letter from Stella" (1971), which serves as an epilogue to this present work. Front wrapper detached with some loss along the bottom edge, but present; lengthwise crease to the pamphlet as a whole from being folded. An interesting address that compares the Civil War with the Second Boer War and how calamitous it would have been had Lee not surrendered but followed Jefferson Davis's vision of the Civil War having "entered upon a new phase. . . . Relieved from the necessity of guarding particular points, our army will be free to move from point to point, to strike the enemy in detail far from his base" (qtd on p. 4). Uncommon.

Rear wrapper is lacking; spine is chipped and front wrapper and final leaf are soiled and worn. Binding sound. Contents are largely clean. All plates are present as called for. Haynes 70.

New York: The Colophon, Ltd, 1931. Hard Cover. Good binding. Quarto. Limited edition, one of 3000 copies. Bound as issued in printed paper over boards. Milne's etching is present. Lightly rubbed some wear to the joints, though it remains a solid copy; minor dampstaining to the top corner of the spine and boards, a stain that carries into the textblock, visible in the top, inner margin of most leaves including the Milne etching; library stamp at the top of the front free endpaper and title page being the only indication that this is ex-library. While Milne's signed, "Hilltop: A Drypoint in Two Colors" is what makes this such a collected issue of The Colophon, there is a wealth of material including but not limited to essays by Charles Chesnutt, A Edward Newton, and Frederick Goudy, as well as a bibliography of the illustrations of Rudolph Ruzicka by William A Kittredge.

Binding rubbed and worn at the extremities; front board has been tastefully reattached; the leather at the rear joint is separating but the board remains fairly solid; some splitting to the leather at the spine; bookseller's ticket on the bottom of the front pastedown; some bookseller's pencil notation on the front endpapers, otherwise clean. All in all a solid and fairly appealing copy despite the wear. Text in Greek and Latin. ESTC R3100.

[Washington, DC], 1860. Soft Cover. Very Good binding. Octavo. 79, [1]; 15 pp., maps. Removed from volume, now in recent plain wrappers. Light and scattered foxing, else clean; large folding maps have closed tears near the stubbing. Steam-powered naval vessels of the 19th century needed coal and lots of it. The U. S. Secretary of the Navy sought to obtain a reliable and abundant supply for the Pacific and Caribbean fleets through a contract with the Chiriqui Improvement Company of Nueva Granada; coal from the Chiriqui region of what is not Panama was to be extracted and transported for the navy's use to two ports, one on the Caribbean coast and one the Pacific. Present here are the majority and minority reports of the House Committee on Naval Affairs. They are detailed and informative and include three highly important maps of the Chiriqui region.

Contemporary limp vellum with slightly yapp edges and remnants of ties; author's name in old-fashioned calligraphic fashion on the spine; several early owner names on the flyleaf, each successively crossed out long ago. Binding moderately toned and rippled as expected, but remains a stately binding; a bit of toning to the contents and scattered tidelines, this this remains a clean copy. Originally issued in 1688, this is the second edition. In depth discussion of capacity and disability, inheritance and succession, and incompatibility of offices in Spanish and canon law in addition to the intersection of all of those matters as they overlap in practice. Important civil and canon law work.

Generally in remarkably nice condition, though both Nos. of Volume I are worn at the spine; rear wrapper and attached folding plate and final leaf are detached together, the plate might be nearly inaccessible but for this separation; some rippling to the top of Vol III, perhaps from moisture exposure; both Nos. of Volume VII are similarly worn at the spine but to a much lesser degree, with the exception of these Nos. generally in Very Good or better condition. It's constitution clearly outlines its goals: "The object of the society is to discover, procure, preserve, and diffuse whatever may relate to the natural, civil, literary, and ecclesiastical history of the State of Alabama, and of the States in connection with her." And in this it was fairly successful until all activities were suspended during the Civil War. The society continued, punctuated by moments of enthusiasm and productivity into the first decade of the 20th century when it ceased in 1905. This copy has been warmly inscribed by Gordon to Eppa Hunton, Jr. who was the son of the Confederate General Eppa Hunton as well as a founding partner of the Richmond, VA law firm Hunton & Williams (now Hunton Andrews & Kurth). A nice association of a book that Nevins calls, "a complete, balanced study of the Alabama politician and congressman; based on Curry's papers, including many of his letters" CWB II, 36.

Trade paperback. Trivial shelfwear included a lightly bumped top, fore-edge corner. Alexander read at President Barack Obama's first inauguration, and only the fourth poet to read at an inauguration. A nice copy of Alexander's first book.
