We have recently acquired the library of Harry Horlock Stringer who was a leading British potter at the old Fulham Pottery in the 1950's where he concentrated on earthenware. Later he moved to Taggs Yard in Barnes, south west London, where he built and ran his own school, welcoming pupils and making friends such as Ginger Rogers from across the world at a time when studio pottery was enjoying newfound popularity. Stringer experimented with his own glazes and firing techniques, and wrote a book on Raku, becoming a Fellow of the Craft Potters Association, editing the association's journal for a time and exhibiting widely as well as lecturing at home and abroad. From the collection of Kenneth Robinson (1914-2005), a distinguished civil servant who became an expert on colonial government and administration. He was closely involved in international aspects of postwar planning, including former colonies, in south-West Africa (now Namibia), and became the Commonwealth Office expert on French West Africa. He became assistant secretary in the CO in 1946 (and head of the West African department), but resigned in 1948 to become reader in Commonwealth government at Oxford and subsequently director and professor of commonwealth affairs at the Institute of Commonwealth Studies in London. Foolscap paper in red and black, annotated throughout by the author, firmly held in a Perry Spring Binder. Four letters and a dedication page precede the text in which the author who lived at Station House, Bynea offered his work and was subsequently delighted to deposit this copy with the Borough Librarian, J E Thomas who praises 'this painstaking production' which will 'be carefully preserved.. It is our custom to inform the local newspapers of important donations...' Lyons describes his work as containing 'over 2000 [place names], together with well over 600 Prefixes, Suffixes, Derivatives....' gives a list of his authorities and summarises his subject as 'an intensely interesting study... Small notebook (10x16cm) bound in grey cloth covered card, contained within an anonymous black folder. Author's signature on the front pastedown: 'A F Wilson 8 Stychedale Ave, Coventry'. Opposite an Index of contents with 'folio' numbers: 56ff - 112 pages of manuscript text in a mixture of pencil and inks with red for highlighting and diagrams - Wilson writes across the whole. The text is begins with the History of Gas Warfare, persistence of gas on the battlefield, classification of gases and their effects on troops, conditions for using gas and the chilling 'Value of Gas in warfare'.
