Near Fine. pp 99 [1] A A Milne's classic of childhood bound in blue cloth with gilt decoration to the covers featuring characters from the books, top edge gilt, pictorial end papers and delightful illustrations by E H Shepard. The book is near fine, a little rubbing to the spine but otherwise the covers are fresh with bright gilt; the binding is firm, the pages are crisp, clean and unmarked. Attractive book plate and contemporary ownership inscription to half title. A splendid copy of this early edition. Near Fine 1924

Harry Horlock Stringer's blind ownership stamp on title page. We have recently acquired the library of Harry Horlock Stringer who was a leading British potter at the old Fulham Pottery in the 1950's where he concentrated on earthenware. Later he moved to Taggs Yard in Barnes, south west London, where he built and ran his own school, welcoming pupils and making friends such as Ginger Rogers from across the world at a time when studio pottery was enjoying newfound popularity. Stringer experimented with his own glazes and firing techniques, and wrote a book on Raku, becoming a Fellow of the Craft Potters Association, editing the association's journal for a time and exhibiting widely as well as lecturing at home and abroad. On page 1 there is a pencil gift inscription to New york heiress Gwendoline Caldwell, dated Paris 1902. An ex Westminster Public Library copy with several stamps, especially to verso of title page, a Brentano's of Paris booksellers plate, and a German bookplate to front pastedown featuring the coat of arms of the Zedtwitz family. Overall good with an interesting provenance. Good 1901

Very good in green cloth, spine sunned, edges browned, bookseller's ticket of 'Parker & Son, Oxford'. This book comes from the private collection of British Prime Minister Harold Wilson and his wife Mary who died recently at the age of 102. During his lifetime Harold Wilson kept the book in the Ashley Gardens mansion flat in Westminster that the couple shared until his death in 1995. After she lost her husband Mary Wilson continued to live in the couple's flat, surrounded by a lifetime's accumulation of books and memories until 2016. Very Good 1929

In very good condition in blue card wrappers, very clean apart from rust marks from the staples. From the collection of Kenneth Robinson (1914-2005), a distinguished civil servant who became an expert on colonial government and administration. He was closely involved in international aspects of postwar planning, including former colonies, in south-West Africa (now Namibia), and became the Commonwealth Office expert on French West Africa. He became assistant secretary in the CO in 1946 (and head of the West African department), but resigned in 1948 to become reader in Commonwealth government at Oxford and subsequently director and professor of commonwealth affairs at the Institute of Commonwealth Studies in London. He was vice-chancellor of the University of Hong Kong from 1965 to 1972. Very Good 1963

[ff] 100 Substantial original typescript on the origins of Welsh place and house names and their translations into English which was presented with some flourish to Llanelly Public Library. Foolscap paper in red and black, annotated throughout by the author, firmly held in a Perry Spring Binder. Four letters and a dedication page precede the text in which the author who lived at Station House, Bynea offered his work and was subsequently delighted to deposit this copy with the Borough Librarian, J E Thomas who praises 'this painstaking production' which will 'be carefully preserved.. It is our custom to inform the local newspapers of important donations...' Lyons describes his work as containing 'over 2000 [place names], together with well over 600 Prefixes, Suffixes, Derivatives....' gives a list of his authorities and summarises his subject as 'an intensely interesting study... Wales is an ancient country. It is a country of romance....' Very Good 1943

Coventry: Unpublished, 1942. Second World War Midlands-based study of the history of gas in warfare and the best ways to counter and deal with its renewed use over Britain. Small notebook (10x16cm) bound in grey cloth covered card, contained within an anonymous black folder. Author's signature on the front pastedown: 'A F Wilson 8 Stychedale Ave, Coventry'. Opposite an Index of contents with 'folio' numbers: 56ff - 112 pages of manuscript text in a mixture of pencil and inks with red for highlighting and diagrams - Wilson writes across the whole. The text is begins with the History of Gas Warfare, persistence of gas on the battlefield, classification of gases and their effects on troops, conditions for using gas and the chilling 'Value of Gas in warfare'. There are notes on Gas duties, respirators and decontamination. Unusually Wilson writes across the whole opening of each double page.
