Autograph letter signed by Alfred Ainger (1837-1904), English cleric, literary biographer, and critic. Letter is dated Good Friday Evening and addressed to "My dear Gerty" [his old friend Gertrude King.] Ainger inquires whether "Kenny" is home for Easter and might come for dinner. "I am quite alone," he writes. Signed as "A. Ainger." One sheet, folded in half to 4.5 x 7 inches. VG. Ainger wrote memoirs of Thomas Hood and George Crabbe but is best known for his Charles Lamb biography and his 6-volume edition of Lamb's works. Late in life, Ainger was chaplain to Queen Victoria and King Edward VII.

Ainsworth writes to arrange a social call on a Mrs. Howard in Upper Charlotte Street, [London.] Signed "W. Harrison Ainsworth. / Kensal Manor House." Ainsworth moved in 1841 to Kensal Manor, where he often hosted Dickens, Thackeray, and other literary figures of the day. VG with old mailing folds, typical signs of age. Tipped to a later leaf.

On the letterhead of Benson & Son, a supplier in York, England, of cycles, parts, accessories, and "Machines Built to Order." 7.25 x 10 inches. VG with original mailing folds. Will ship flat, as shown. Addressed to W.G. Distin of Saranac Lake, NY. A representative of the company wrote that he was surprised to hear Distin was having trouble finding valve tubing, so he was enclosing a piece free of charge. The letter also says, in part: "We are very pleased to hear your cycle is giving you satisfaction … (We) are having a real good time in the cycle business, not a little of which is due to our having agency for the Raleigh Cycle." An uncommon book published to benefit the small public library in Keene Valley, NY, in the High Peaks region. The author is a professor in Scotland who has been visiting the Adirondacks since the 1970s.

Circa 1890s pencil drawing of a chubby boy in a plaid shirt with his hair parted in the middle. As found, wrapped in brown paper from Andrus & Church Booksellers of Ithaca, NY. The firm served generations of Cornell students and other patrons from 1852 to the mid-20th century. Along with books, it sold stationery, art supplies and other goods, and offered printing and book binding services. The brown paper is approx. 10.5 x 11 inches. The unsigned drawing is 7 x 8 inches and is not attached. Found with the paper folded over on three sides and the drawing visible, as shown. Versos of both items are blank. A charming original drawing with an uncommon bit of bookseller ephemera. VG with typical signs of age but no flaws of note.

A biography of Sir Henry Morton Stanley (1841-1904), British journalist and Africa explorer who led the expedition to find Scottish missionary David Livingstone. Stanley created an enduring catch phrase in 1871 and became the butt of constant jokes for his famous greeting, "Dr. Livingstone, I presume?" This book focuses on how the public ridicule deeply affected Stanley, even as he went on to become one of great figures of African exploration and colonization. xiii, 207 pages, notes and index. Three small tipped-in color plates of work by Chodowiecki. Color text vignettes and decoration. Slender hardcover, 10 x 6.5 inches. Fine binding of half leather (spine and corners) and marbled paper boards. Good with moderate wear, short cracks of the front inner hinge. Sound and securely bound. Joint bookplate of noted collectors Karl and Thilde Wagner on the front pastedown.

Exhibited in 1960-61 at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, the Toledo Museum of Art, and the Metropolitan Museum. With historical introduction, catalog entries on the art and artists represented, and 161 illustrations of paintings, drawing, sculpture, and tapestries. Signed and inscribed in 1960 by John Walker, director of the National Gallery of Art, to Scott Kirkpatrick, head of the National Theater, also located in Washington, DC. Walker was the second director of the National Gallery, from 1956-69. xiv, 93 pages + 161 pages of illustrations on glossy paper. Paperbound, 7 by 8.25 inches. Stiff blue covers with gilt title lettering. VG condition. Minor edge wear and a small scratch to the front cover. Crisp, clean, and securely bound. A superb association copy linking the influential directors from two of Washington's leading cultural institutions.

Vintage poster entitled "Not Everyone Is An Artist." Circa 1970s. 24 x 16.5 inches. Printed on heavy orange paper with b&w photo of students and a brief description of the school's philosophy. Nice condition with original fold lines (2 horizontal and one vertical.) From the estate of a NY artist, who had this poster in storage for many years. Will ship folded, as shown in the last image. Montserrat was established in 1970 in Beverly, MA, by a group of North Shore/Boston-area artists. Emerging from the ethos of the counterculture era, it was conceived as a non-traditional art school with an intensive studio environment for prospective professional artists. It was accredited in the 1980s and renamed the Montserrat School of Art. Note: This seems to be a rare poster. It is marked as Poster #4, but we couldn't locate another example of it or any other early poster from this series.
