Description:
Paris: Le Petit Journal, 1906. First Edition. wrappers. Very good. 1st Continental appearance (?), covered earlier in the U.S. and U.K.  Original sheets (4), as issued. Very good.  The massacre took place from September 22-24, upwards of 100 Black residents of Atlanta were murdered in an event that was, in the immediacy, misrepresented regionally, downplayed nationally and then ignored locally for 100 years. The details can be easily researched, with numerous scholarly works published in the past 20 years. We'd say this illustration, and its report, would add to any African American archive that includes the event.

Description:
Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1941. First edition. Near fine in an about very good, somewhat spine-faded dustwrapper with some internal tape removed, a couple of seamless professional mends, and a couple of small chips. Issued in a small edition, an extended essay on rural poverty with arresting images by Evans. Aside from its place in literary history, the Walker Evans images have made it something of an iconic volume for students of photography. Parr and Badger, *The Photobook Volume 1*, p.144; Roth, *The Book of 101 Books*, p. 108-109.

Description:
Boston: Joseph H Allen, 1867. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. 12 vols. in 1. 1st appearance anywhere, complete in 12 issues of The Student and Schoolmate Illustrated Monthly, vol. XIX no. 1 through vol. XX no. 6 (January - December 1867). The original, dozen, monthly parts bound by the publisher in cloth, preceding the common, 1868, 1st book edition, published by Loring, the uncountable reprints of it, and the hundreds of attempts to replicate it by Alger and others. Original cloth, a small chip at the spine's base, the odd few pages toned, but get over it. This is a very good, unrepaired copy of a rare book in original cloth (no copies listed on RBH) and as American as apple pie, but these days, that'd be frozen apple pie, with a slice of processed cheese on top. Ref: Grolier 100 American, no. 75. Ralph Gardner, 445, saying, Ragged Dick was not the author's first book, as is widely believed, but it is the story that launched him as an all-time best-selling author. You say you like your books… Read More

Description:
London: Richard Bentley and Son, 1886. First Edition. cloth. fine. 3 vols. 1st edition. Publisher's cloth, fine condition, a paragon of beauty and preservation. Rare. No sales at auction in 50 years though copies may well have been sold lotted with other books and therefore not recorded in RBH's auction records. However, only 9 sets have been located by OCLC and COPAC in national, and university libraries around the world, and these global library cooperatives deliver a more reliable census for raw numbers, but can be misleading in their own way because they include the imperfect, the defective, the misdescribed, the repaired, the rebound, the abused, the broken, the now lost, the ugly, the spectral, and the forsaken. The title is taken from the old name of the Lieutenant's lodgings in the Tower of London, and the Tower itself is a presence in (almost a character in) the tale of a young woman, bookish and antiquarian, who choses wrongly in a man, and learns that love won't die of starvation, and can… Read More
