Description:
London, Fosh & Cross, [1949]. Oblong large 4to. Original wrappers; pp. [40]; apart from minimal marking to wrappers a very good copy of an extremely rare publication. 'The Avro Athena was a British Advanced Training aircraft designed to replace the Harvard aircraft. It was originally designed for a gas turbine engine, and the first three prototypes used this. However the RAF had large stocks of Merlin engines and the type was re-designed to utilise this engine. 15 examples were built and used for a short time by the RAF. However the RAF preferred the Boulton Paul Balliol so no further Athenas were built and its RAF career was short' (from an advertisement for a digitized pdf).

First edition of the substantially enlarged version (first, and shorter, 1883). Beecher, brother of Harriet Beecher Stowe, was an effective American nineteenth century orator, noted for his support of the abolition of slavery and the suffrage of women, as well as his friendship with some of the century's most famous writers, including Henry Thoreau, Mark Twain, and Walt Whitman. Among his many daring exploits were the Beecher Bibles, trunks of guns sent to abolitionist settlers for self defence, marked as Bibles. In 1863 Lincoln had sent Beecher on an extensive lecture tour to Europe, where he shifted popular support away from the… Read More

Description:
1918. [London], Admiralty War Staff, Intelligence Division, November, 1918. 8vo. Original black cloth, lettered in gilt; pp. 556; a very good and clean copy. Second, considerably enlarged edition (the first edition of 1916 had 360 pages). After Townshend's catastrophic defeat at Kut in April 1916 the Mesopotamia Commission of Inquiry was set up, and the Admiralty was convinced that only good intelligence about the available infastructure, man and animal power, as well as mineral and agricultural resources in still Ottoman Iraq was vital for a possible advance into these territories. These handbooks correct existing sources of information and maps, and analyze the country's physical and economic geography. Interesting in this considerably enlarged second edition is the much extended section on Oil and Bitumen. 'In the southern and central parts of this area there are extensive belts of country where the presence of oil is known or suspected' (p. 59). Description:
This is the visiting card of the Egyptian nationalist and prominent army leader Ahmad Arabi (or Urabi; 1841-1911), known for his participation in the 1879 uprising that precipitated a revolt against the Anglo-French government of Tewfik Pasha (1852-1892). The Egyptian army civil service was run mostly by non-Egyptians, and 'normal' Egyptian people had almost no chance to rise through the ranks, with Urabi as the exception. As minister of war he declared the Khedive a traitor, British troops intervened and bombed Alexandria, a stronghold of the uprising in 1882. 'Urabi Pasha was captured, court-martialled, and sentenced to death, but, with British intervention, the sentence was changed to exile in Ceylon (Sri Lanka). He was permitted to return to Egypt in 1901. Although Urabi died an unpopular figure in relative obscurity, his image was revitalised in the 1950s by Gamal Abdel Nasser, whose rise to power bore similarities to Urabi's' (Encyclopaedia Britannica, online). mounted together with: Ahmed… Read More

1948. London, Cobbett Press, 1948. 8vo. First edition. The author of this work, 'Victor Alba, … never existed, despite a volume of published evidence' (The Guardian, online). Pere Pagès, who used Alba as his political pseudonym, was a Spanish communist, and was later exiled to France after the end of the Spanish Civil War. This book is a first-hand account of Franco's Spain by a Spanish journalist. He is somebody who knows Spain intimately, as not many people ever could. With experience in Spanish concentration camps, to hiking the Pyrenees's scenic paths, and working in illegal printing presses. Alba paints his contemporary Spain in a true, bare light. Box 99, Western Central District Office, New Oxford Street, W.C.1, August 1943 to January 1944. Five parts within printed card wrappers in Navy shoestring-bound original cloth folder with lettering on front cover; highly illustrated with folding maps, charts and diagrams; near-fine. This extremely rare top secret publication gives in its first part information on Albania 'pre-invasion', and outlines the country 'post-invasion' (issued in August 1943) in the second part. The third part is the Map Section, which is followed by two supplements, the last of which with the sub-title Political and Local Directory. All we were able to find out about this perfectly disguised publisher is that they used the same street address as for the Who's Who in Nazi Germany. In June 1940, the newly created British Special Operations Executive (SOE) was given the task of encouraging resistance movements in Italian-occupied areas.
