Front free endpaper has a Sunday School prize inscription dated October 10th 1897. Attractive head and tail pieces. A very good copy of a rare book telling of the Christmas-time haunting of the White Room at Colston Grange.

Slight rubbing to the joints and mild bumping to the corners. Overall in very good condition. Internally very good, some browning to edges of title page and final leaf. Gathering Gg has been repaired affecting the text but not legibility. Modern endpapers and blank preliminaries stamped "Birmingham Assay Office Library". ESTC locates three copies of this edition in UK institutions and four in the US. Unpaginated but each issue is twelve pages and with a single leaf supplement with a full page nude. Each has a short one page introductory text on some aspect of nude photography ("Le Moral et la Physique", "Modes esthetiques", "Du bon gout") followed by a series of black and white photographs illustrating the theme. The eighteen issues are bound together in grey-green paper wrappers decorated in gold and lettered in dark blue. Bound in are two leaves of advertisements for risque publications, a preface by Vignola and a remarkably detailed index which allows the reader to search models by age, nationality, style and pose. Green buckram, maroon morocco label, lettered in gilt. Some marking and rubbing and a split to the cloth (c45mm) at joint with lower board. Some slight foxing in places but otherwise very good internally with the charming plates in particularly good condition. It is rare to find these coloured. One of the front preliminary leaves has two pages of neat manuscript notes listing plants from Abbot's book that are found in the "best natural pastures". Title page has ownership inscription of a "Mrs Jones". Front pastedown has armorial bookplate of F. Kuhlicke who was senior modern languages master at Bedford Modern School and an authority on Bedfordshire history. Some light fading to the spine, slight toning to edges of first and last leaves and a small hole to foot of the final leaf (not affecting the text) but overall in very good condition throughout. Each photograph has a glassine protective sheet. Contemporary string bound album covered in maroon cloth and stamped with the name of the owner "Mervyn F. Ryan" on the upper cover with "Ahora Periodico Illustrado" stamped at bottom right corner. Some slight rubbing to extremities and wear to corners but otherwise very good and in excellent condition internally with the photographs especially well preserved. This album (or anything like) seems to be unrecorded and we have found nothing similar in the auction records. Some light toning throughout and rear internal hinge starting but intact. In oatmeal cloth with laid-on white, black & red title label to spine. In the original clay-coloured DJ (in protective wraps) with the frontis illustration reproduced to the top cover, some light chipping to the front fold and the top of the spine. Identical to the Britiah first edition this is a scarce work in any condition, let alone with the original jacket. Alec Waugh, the brother of Evelyn, was held as a POW in the First World War and served with distinction with Tito's forces in Yugoslavia (as a member of the embryonic SAS) in the Second. Illustrations by Captain R.T.Roussel (P.O.W. Mainz).

On the verso is the label of Jerry Ohlinger's Movie Material Store. In very good condition. A nice momento of a great, and very funny, film.

Some damp-staining internally with but overall a very good copy. A contemporary owner has inscribed four pages of excerpts from a review notice in the Monthly Review (volume 13, dated 1755). There are some additional notes in the same hand. This book was originally issued (also in 1755) as "Memoirs of Several Ladies of Great Britain" and both title pages are present. It is hard to think of a book where the main title and the sub-titles appear to have so little to connect them. Anyone picking up this book hoping for some good biographical yarns will be disappointed. Letterpress title page is present in volume one only, as usual and the engraved half title is present in all volumes. 664 plates, printed in colour with some hand colouring. The plates are in superb condition, the colours bright and fresh. Many, particularly in the last four volumes are folding. There is some foxing to the text leaves but overall the condition is excellent. Bound in contemporary brown half calf with marbled paper covered boards. Spine decorated and lettered in gilt, the head of the spines and the top compartment of some of the volumes have been neatly repaired. A very handsome set of one of the nineteenth century's most important botanical works. Henry Cranke Andrews (1758/9 - 1835) published his first botanical prints in 1794 and between 1797 and 1814, he issued The Botanists' Repository for New and Rare Plants in monthly parts. Album of photographs from South Africa dated 1900-01 taken by a British soldier during the Second Boer War (11 October 1899-31 May 1902). South Africa n.p 1900-01. Forty-seven black and white photographs (53x78mm) mounted back-to-back in thick card mounts (104x130mm) bound in a maroon morocco small oblong album (110x135mm). One photograph is missing. Sympathetically rebacked and in very good condition. The grey mounts are all inscribed in pencil with descriptions of the photographs and the occasional comment. Apart from a stain on the front pastedown and the first mount (not affecting the photograph) it is in excellent condition internally. A few of the photographs are showing some slight fading but are still visible. The front pastedown has the inscription "To my wife as a small Xmas present from the Sunny South December 1901". Whether the wife of our anonymous soldier appreciated this Christmas present we will never know but it is certainly a very good, personal record of life in South Africa during… Read More

Tan half calf, rebacked and corners repaired, eighteenth-century marbled paper covered boards. Raised bands, burgundy morocco label lettered in gilt "Maps J:R". Some scuffing and staining to the boards. A repaired tear to the first page of text but otherwise in very good condition throughout. The author is unidentified and, possibly, unidentifiable but the main section on England is based on Thomas Badeslade's Chorographia Britannia of 1741 originally intended as a pocket atlas for George I. A nice copy of this collection of thirty-eight short essays on a variety of subjects including Materialism, Byron's Cain, A Mystery, Bulls, Fortune Telling, Sleep, Dreams, Atheism, Light, Sound, the Employment of Children in Churches, the Language of Birds and Nonentity of Matter. An odd book. We have been unable to trace the identity of the author. It appears in this one edition only. There is no obvious theme linking the thirty-eight essays (although the metaphysical, the mystical and the ethereal are pre-occupations) and it seems that the pieces were written purely for this collection as they exist nowhere else. Internally very good, a few pencil underlinings and marginal annotations and some pages unopened and overall a nice copy of a rare work located by Worldcat in seven UK libraries and none in the US. Henry Kirke White had ambitions to enter the sacred ministry and spent a year studying with a priest in Lincolnshire before entering Cambridge. Southey said of him that never was there a "devouter christian" and that "of his fervent piety, his letters, his prayers, and his hymns, will afford ample and interesting proofs". n.p. 1898, 1898. Pen and ink portrait of Aubrey Beardsley signed "T.B.B. '98". Image measures 117x77mm, on card (187x142mm), inside a border beneath which is inscribed "Aubrey Beardsley. Artist, died 1898, aged 24". The image is based on a self-portrait done by Beardsley in 1896 and shows him, in profile, in the form of a bust, in white against a black background. Some foxing to the margins and, lightly, in a few places on the portrait but overall a very good portrait which, in a few simple lines, captures the ethereal delicacy of one of the strangest and most influential talents of fin de siècle Britain.

Black and white photograph (238x189mm) of Charlie Chaplin and Harry Lauder signed by both of them. Light creasing and some rubbing. Chaplin and Lauder were the leading comic performers of their day. They only appeared together in one short 1918 film (which is probably when this photograph was taken). Signed photographs of the two together seem to be extremely rare and we have been unable to trace another one. Sold with this photograph is another photograph of Lauder inscribed by him to "Margo" and a postcard with a printed sketch of Lauder. There are also two letters and a legal settlement between Lauder and a Mabel Jarman (from whom this photograph and accompanying documents came) in which she agreed to hand over a number of letters for £780.

Upper and lower covers with a triple fillet border in gilt, and a central panel with a triple fillet border in blind with a floral device at the corners. Inside this central panel are two pairs of curls with a fleuron and an encircled dot all in gilt.
