John Howland (1873-1926), the recipient of this copy, was a director of pediatrics at Johns Hopkins and a prominent researcher into pediatric diseases and disorders; the American Pediatric Society's John Howland Award is named for him.

Abel isolated histamine from the pituitary extract of animals and demonstrated its role in digestion. In the present paper, read before the American Society for Pharmacology and Therapeutics on 25 April 1919, Abel stated that "he had become convinced that all the 'motilines,' 'peristaltic hormones,' 'vaso-dilantins,' and 'histamine-like substances in tissues' described by European investigators were one and the same substance: histamine . . . Abel succeeded in isolating and identifying histamine as the pictrate in extracts of the pituitary gland. Abel, a student of Carl Ludwig and Johns Hopkins's first professor of pharmacology, made significant contributions to the development of biochemistry and pharmacology in the United States. In 1912, while investigating the protein constituents of the blood, Abel suggested that an "artificial kidney" might be used to remove and study constituents of the blood that are present only in minute amounts. The wrappers to parts 1 and 2 have "Tome Quatrième" misprinted for "Tome Cinquième." A classic paper on the adrenal glands, in which Abelous reported his Langlois' conclusion that "these organs are meant to neutralize or destroy toxic substances exuded during muscular activity, the accumulation of which in the organism results in paralysis and rapid death." Edinburgh, 1820. Abercrombie, John (1780-1844). Autograph letter signed, dated Edinburgh, 20th November 1820, to Dr. Thomas H. Burder (1789-1843). 4pp., including integral address leaf. 251 x 202 mm. Creased where previously folded, light wear along a few folds, light soiling, but very good, preserving Abercrombie's wax seal. Excellent long letter congratulating Burder on the recovery of his health after a four-year illness. Abercrombie was the author of the classic "Pathological and Practical Researches on Diseases of the Brain and the Spinal Cord" (1828; G-M 2285.2), as well as the extremely popular "Inquiries Concerning the Intellectual Powers" (1830). Burder, Abercrombie's correspondent, was a London physician who "suffered from almost constant ill-health" (DNB); his article on "Headache," contributed to the "Cyclopedia of Practical Medicine," was based largely on his own experience. .

Lacunae in address leaf, light soiling, traces of former mounting, but very good. Writing to a fellow surgeon, Abernethy states that "I can perceive nothing materially wrong in the care of your patient" and advises "a bread and water poultice by night," which would likely "produce nervous tranquility, to the want of which I attribute the pains rather than to actual disease." .

London, 1793. Autograph letter signed to an unidentified correspondent (possibly the publishing firm of Cadell & Davies). London, n.d. [1797?]. 160 x 183 mm. Mounted. Small repair slightly affecting one word, but very good otherwise. From British surgeon John Abernethy, author of the first classification of tumors based on pathologic anatomy (Garrison-Morton.com 13225) and the first to ligate the external iliac artery for aneurysm (Garrison-Morton.com 2928). Abernethy's letter refers to his Surgical and Physiological Essays (1793-97), and was probably written to the London publishing firm of Cadell & Davies, which issued the third part of the Essays (1797) after the work's original publisher, James Evans, went bankrupt in 1795. Moderate foxing, but very good. First Edition. Ackermann studied medicine under von Siebold and Soemmering and later taught at the universities of Mainz, Jena and Heidelberg. He began his anatomical studies of hermaphrodites around 1798, and in 1805 published his Infantis androgyni historia et ichnographia, in which he described his anatomical investigation of a hermaphrodite infant, cited several similar cases, and presented, in a separate section, his theories on sex and procreation. The work is illustrated with five engraved plates showing the infant's genitalia in progressive stages of dissection. .
