Description:
Lanham, Maryland: University Press of America, Inc, 2001. First Edition. Trade paperback. Near fine. Inscribed by Abou El Fadl on the front flyleaf. "Using the Muslim experience in the United States as a lens, the author examines what he identifies as a pervasive alienation suffered by Muslims over their place in history, source of identity, and moral foundations. The author imagines himself sitting in a conference of Islamic books - the Conference convening to examine the contemporary Muslim condition. Various influential intellectual trends are represented in this Conference, but the author is not a passive observer, he is an active participant who reacts to the Conference with introspection and critical moral insight. The author positions himself on a bridge between the intellectual heritage of Islam and the oppressive Muslim present, arguing that the salvation of one is intricately linked to the other." Octavo. Description:
Los Angeles: Con Safos, Inc, 1970. Wraps. Near fine. The sixth issue of this important Chicano literary magazine, with three letters from Oscar "Zeta" Acosta, a Mexican-American lawyer who was immortalized as the heavyweight Samoan attorney, Dr. Gonzo, in Hunter S. Thompson's Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1971). He also authored the novels Autobiography of a Brown Buffalo (1972) and The Revolt of the Cockroach People (1973) before his disappearance in 1974 during a trip to Mexico. In the first of the three letters, Acosta confesses his embarrassing fascination with light-skinned women: "We know perfectly well that these colorless broads have not the blood of our mothers and sisters or even your cousin who is of la familia de raza which we struggle to place in history by the colorful designs of our own brown ancestors ...But yet, it has not been you, mujer de Aztlan. Unfortunately, it has not yet been you!" The second letter relates his troubles as a lawyer working unpaid for the cause, while the…

Description:
New York: Charles H. Nicoll, 1893. First Edition. This early football program is notable for featuring William H. Lewis (1868-1949), the first African American to earn First Team All-America honors, who is seen here at the center of the Harvard team portrait. After graduating from Amherst and enrolling at Harvard Law School, he played two seasons for the Crimson, helping the team compile a 22-2 record. In November 1893, Harvard team captain Bertram G. Waters was unable to play in the last game of the season due to an injury. The game was Lewis' last college football game, and the team voted him as the acting captain for the game, making him Harvard's first African American team captain. Following law school, Lewis was hired as a football coach at Harvard, where he served from 1895 to 1906. It was during this time he proposed the "neutral zone" rule that is still used today to lessen the brutality of the game at the line of scrimmage before the snap. He also wrote one of the first books on the game,…
