Description:
1913. With Twenty-Four [Photographic] Illustrations and a Map. London: Methuen & Co., (1913). 32 pp ads Dated July 1912. Original blue-green cloth. First Edition of this early account of traveling through the Lake District by way of that new-fangled contraption, the motorcar. Fourteen sightseeing routes are described in detail -- including the gradient of the steeper climbs, since not all motorcars could handle them. Except for some fading of the spine, this is a fine copy.

Description:
1871. Life at Plumfield with Jo's Boys. Boston: Roberts Brothers, 1871. 4 pp preliminary undated ads. Original green cloth decorated in gilt. First American Edition, published about two weeks after the London one. This is Louisa May Alcott's sequel to her vastly-successful book for children LITTLE WOMEN (two volumes, 1868-1869), in which she had portrayed her own childhood in New England -- with herself as the model for "Jo," and her sisters May, Elizabeth and Anna as (respectively) "Amy," "Beth" and "Meg." This copy is in green cloth (purple and terra-cotta were also available, without priority), and is of the first issue, with "now" the first word of line 5 on p. 146 (later changed to "Nan"), and with PINK AND WHITE TYRANNY listed in the ads as "nearly ready." This is a near-fine, bright copy (just a trace of wear at the spine ends, the volume slightly askew as usual). Blanck 167.

Description:
1859. New York: Rudd & Carleton, 1859. Original blind-stamped brown cloth. First Edition of this very early Aldrich volume, his fourth -- after THE BELLS (1855), DAISY'S NECKLACE (1857) and THE COURSE OF TRUE LOVE (1858). The title verse is "the poem of a little life that was but three Aprils long." This copy is in chocolate brown "A" cloth (one of three cloths used, without precedence); it has no ads (some but not all copies have either 5 pp or 10 pp). This is a remarkably fine, bright copy, virtually as new. Blanck 253.

1895. A Hill-Top Novel. London: John Lane / New York: G. P. Putnam's Sons, 1895. 14 pp undated ads plus 16 pp ads dated 1895. Original olive green cloth decorated in beige. First Edition of "this fantasy about British society and morality, seen through the eyes of a man who has travelled in time from the future, an era when social equality in general and women's rights in particular have become the norm" [S&SL]. This was the 21st volume (of 33) in John Lane's provocative "Keynotes Series"; the binding design and key motif are by Aubrey Beardsley, who did them for the first 21 plus the 23rd volumes of the series; the eleven others had designs by Patten Wilson. This is a near-fine copy (minor rubbing, light cracking of the endpapers). Stetz & Samuels Lasner 68; Samuels Lasner (Beardsley) 45. Included with this copy is Henry Duff Traill's parody of the above: THE BARBAROUS BRITISHERS. A Tip-Top Novel. London: John Lane, n.d.[1896]. Original… Read more

Description:
1916. New York: John Lane Company | London: John Lane, The Bodley Head, 1916. Original orange-brown cloth decorated in black and gilt. First Edition of Sherwood Anderson's first (and most autobiographical) novel -- a rags-to-riches-to-unhappiness tale of an Ohio newsboy, complete with alcoholic father and martyr mother who in trying to feed her children works her way into an early grave. Sam McPherson strives for and achieves fortune, only to realize (after driving his father-in-law to suicide) that there is more to life than money. In 1922, this novel would be re-published with a different ending (less vague, more optimistic -- though many have argued that either ending is too unlikely). In any case, this was Anderson's initiation into the art of writing fiction -- which would come to fruition three years later, with WINESBURG, OHIO (1919). This is a fine copy of this early midwestern novel (complete with ear of corn on front cover and spine). Housed in a (slightly wrinkled) slipcase with… Read more
