Munich: Tovarishchestvo Zarubezhnykh Pisatelei, 1963. First edition of Akhmatova's masterpiece, first published in this form in the West, without the poet's knowledge, fourteen years prior to its publication in the Soviet Union in the journal Novyi mir in April 1987. "From 1925 until 1940, there was an unofficial ban on the publication of Akhmatova's poetry. Akhmatova concentrated on scholarship, immersing herself in her critical studies of Pushkin. Not daring to write it down, she recited various parts to friends, including Lidiya Chukovskaya (Korney Chukovsky's daughter), who memorized and reassembled them. Requiem, a tribute to the ordeal of the victims of the Terror, and the women who waited in the prison lines hoping to get word of them, is based on her own experience in Leningrad, where Lev was imprisoned for 17 months. Description:
In 1979, Jon Friedman founded the annual Bisbee Poetry Festival in the historic mining town of Bisbee, AZ, a picturesque town on the Mexican border that had become a vibrant center of creative activity for musicians, writers, and artists. Every year for the next seven years Friedman invited six of the best contemporary poets to Bisbee during third week of August to read their poetry to audiences that usually exceeded 500 avid fans from around the country. The readings, which might more accurately be described as performances, varied from an hour to an hour and a half, and these readings, along with the interviews, workshops, press conferences and informal social events that surrounded the readings, were all professionally videotaped, thereby capturing some of the most riveting live poetry readings of the period. In all forty-four poets participated in the personalized week-long residences that the Bisbee Poetry Festival offered them, including Kathy Acker, Helen Adam, Ai, David Antin, John Ashbery,… Read More

She was also editor of The Taos Review. Sobelman's archive consists of approximately 14 plastic boxes measuring 24 x 16 x 6 inches. In addition to Sobelman's manuscripts, the archive includes her voluminous notebooks, a few hundred of them, which Brenda Hillman describes as follows: "the notebooks have her original art, drawings and paintings, along with her literary notebooks— which are more or less diaries and in some cases drafts of poems imbedded among the art. The art is **extremely** colorful and vibrant and the combination of the writings, very personal and intimate, often like letters to self though not always comprehensible, and… Read More
