Laid into this copy is a photograph which served as the frontispiece, a label pasted at the bottom margin prints, “Winter Sunrise, Sierra Nevada, from Lone Pine, California. 1944 from a photograph by Ansel Adams [inked ‘AA’] This reproduction approved and initialed by the photographer.” This plate is superior in quality to that in the book.

Washington: Printed by Duff Green, 1835. Original wrappers (the upper wrapper is printed, apparently in the same setting of type as the title page); 96 pages including the title leaf; 94 pages of text. Another edition was issued the same year by Gales and Seaton. Adams was elected to the House after his defeat by Jackson for a second Presidential term. At that earlier election, this printer, a publisher and politician, was a supporter of Adams’s opponent. A very good copy of what is essentially a short biography of the recently deceased Lafayette.

Boston: John W. Folsom, 1798. First Edition. 360 pages, including the printing of a Washington letter, a geographically arranged index, and four pages of subscribers’ names (almost entirely from Massachusetts, most of whom were from Boston); bound without preliminaries in what is apparently early 20th century 3/4 leather; titled on the spine “Patriotic Addresses” and dated “1798.” Top edge gilt; some page staining; a good copy. Mostly concerning the then-current hostile state of affairs with France. This would have been a poor time for the young nation to get into a shooting war with a world power.

Portsmouth, New Hampshire: Published by the Author, 1825. First Edition. Contemporary and presumably original full calf; page spotting, rubbing, front free endpaper chipped; good. Red morocco and gilt label of “W. Adams” on the front board; ownership signature of Winthrop Adams (extremity chipped) and the book label of Charles W. Adams inside the front cover and the stamp “Charles W. Adams, Cambridge, Mass.” at the top of the title page.

A larger than usual cartoon sketch, approximately 13 1/2 x 17 1/2”; matted, framed and glazed. The cartoon depicts the shop window of “Henry Grey: Mortician” below which are displayed testimonials from satisfied customers (i.e.: ”To Hank, I’ll be seein ya pal...). Signed in pencil and noted “Final 17 Aug 56.” Addams employed mortician storefronts in several of his cartoons. This example was probably the last of his pencil sketches for this piece, the notation “Final” likely referred to approval to complete it in pen, ink and wash for publication.
