I have taken all knowledge to be my province,’ Bacon declared He held to his course, if not ‘beyond the utmost bound of human thought,’ at least to the uttermost edge discernible in his day— and that, too, in every department of intellectual activity. Description:
Leipsic: Karl Baedeker, Publishers, 1900. Revised edition of Baedeker's classic standard guidebook to the Rhine Valley. Octavo, original boards, ribbon bound in, all edges marbled, illustrated with numerous folding maps. Fine in the scarce original dust jacket which is in very good condition. German publisher Karl Ludwig Johannes Baedeker set the standard for authoritative guidebooks for tourists in the late 19th century. From the beginning, Baedeker realised the importance of including quality, reliable maps in his travel guides, which were black-and-white initially. To this end, he engaged the services of Eduard Wagner of Darmstadt, a specialist in cartography, and the maps he produced for Baedeker were revolutionary at the time. The first Baedeker travel guide in English appeared in 1861 after Karl Baedeker's death.

Description:
london: Henry S. King, 1873. First edition of this "undying classic" (J.M. Keynes). Octavo, original cloth. In very good condition, contemporary bookplate to the pastedown. A very nice example. The English precursor to Wall Street, London's Lombard Street is the original district of finance and the birthplace of the money market. Fast-paced and highly-charged, it is a hotbed of financial activity whose impact is felt not just nationally, but globally. Though similar in many ways to its American counterpart, this "unequalled fund of floating money" nevertheless possesses a character all its own, the essence of which was brilliantly captured more than a century ago in Lombard Street. "Walter Bagehot was a great economist and a great writer-though there is a question as to which was the greater. Lombard Street, first published in 1873, is more than ever timely in the age of Asian financial flu, Long-Term Capital Management, problems in Russia, Brazil, and on the horizon elsewhere.
