Richly iilustrated with 3487 wood-engraved figures of plants. ¶ Barnard I: 106; Stafleu/Cowan I: 257; Blunt 284; BM I: 87; Kew I: 125. Baillon, one of the greatest French taxonomist of his time, was Payes best pupil. Auguste Faguet (1841-1886) was one of the greatest French botanical artists of the 19th century, who as a master of wood-engraving, contributed to many major botanical publications. A fine copy in a solid and attractive binding.

Original green publisher's cloth, spine gilt lettered (top and bottom of spine & corners very slightly rubbed; sides partly very slightly stained). With 3 portraits of Mendel, 38 figures in the text and 6 coloured plates of which 5 double-page. ¶ First published in 1902, rewritten in 1909 and here in the updated final (and best) edition of 1913. "Bateson opposed Galton's theory of continuous inheritance and insisted on the truth of the phenomenon of discontinuity in variation. Shortly afterward's Mendel's forgotten paper was discovered proving that Bateson was correct. Title printed in red and black. With about 350 text illustrations and 16 plates, all wood-engravings. Apart from some slight scattered foxing, a very good copy of a very charmingly illustrated Buffon for children.

St Helens,: Th. Beecham,, 1893.. 20 pp. 12mo (10 x 14 cm.). Original printed wrappers (slightly stained). Beecham's Pills have been sold for some years in Great Britain where they are advertised under the slogan, "Worth a Guinea a Box". B.F. Allen Co was the sole agent for the U.S.A, who sold a box for 25 cent. Analyses by the BMA showed that the Beecham Pills consist of aloes, ginger and soap. The ingredients of a box of these pills cost a quarter of a cent. Indeed, "What need of Aladdin's lamp when we can build a palace with a patent pill" (James Russell Lowel).

This is the compiler's own copy with her annotations in red for a shadow collection of this fine collection of Dutch Art Nouveau book production. A unique copy.
