A very good copy. Some of the material in this volume first appeared as The British legacy; or, Fountain of of Knowledge in 1754, with material from The complete English Cook ; or, Prudent Housewife by Lydia Fisher in later editions.

Cantabrigiae, Typis Academicis: Inpensis Guilielmi Innys...., 1713. 8vo, 176 x 106, pp. [xxxvi], 297 [298 - 303 Index, 304 - 310 blank], contemporary panelled calf; rear cover slightly defective but a very good copy. "The Book of the Courtier" is the usual translation of Libro del Cortigiano, published by Castiglione (1478 - 1529) published in 1528 but many years in the composition. The first version in English was by Thomas Hoby in 1561, and the work was widely reprinted in numbers translations and in the original Italian for two or three centuries. Bartholomew Clerke (1537 - 1590) translated the work into Latin in 1572, with three subsequent editions published in 1585, 1593, and 1603. Clerke is identified on the title-page in a contemporary hand, as "Coll. Regalis olim Socio"; in his career, he was scholar and fellow of King's College, Cambridge and a proctor of the university. "In 1528, the year before his death, the book for which Castiglione is most famous, The Book of the Courtier (Il Libro del Cortegiano), was published in Venice by the Aldine Press[11] run by the heirs of Aldus Manutius. The book, in dialog form, is an elegiac portrait of the exemplary court of Guidobaldo da Montefeltro of Urbino during Castiglione's youthful stay there at the beginning of the sixteenth century. This novel for children was to prove the author's most popular publication: Barbara Hofland [née Wreaks] (1770 - 1844) published about 60 novels in her lifetime, and most of them were reprinted at least once. "In Son of a Genius, the lesson which Hofland stresses with more urgency than any other is the importance of keeping receipts. Ludovico finds a receipt, seeks for its owner, and when he is able to return it to him, is rewarded with two guineas. This much is the conventional 'honesty rewarded' episode of so many moral tales. But Hofland goes much further. Greg was a protestant chaplain in various Irish prisons in the 19th century. Purportedly a biography of the French actress Eliza Rachel Felix (1821 - 1858), the work seems to be heavily fictionalized. Il Pastor Fido was first performed in honour of the nuptials of the Duke of Savoy and Catharine of Austria in 1585 and published in 1590 in Venice; it was frequently reprinted thereafter. Guarini (1538-1612) "is remembered for the immensely popular and influential pastoral play, Il pastor fido (1589; The Faithful Shepherd), which stirred up a far-reaching critical debate.
