Beautifully illustrated antique copy of "The Horkey - A Provincial Ballad" by Robert Bloomfield. 1882; Macmillan and Co.; London. The book features wonderful color illustrations on every page by GEORGE CRUIKSHANK.The name "horkey" was applied to end of harvest customs and celebrations, especially in the Eastern Counties of England. In the introduction to The Horkey, Bloomfield sets the scene..."In Suffolk husbandry, the man who goes foremost through the harvest with the scythe or the sickle is honoured with the title of 'Lord,' and at the Horkey, or harvest home-feast, collects what he can for himself or brethren, from the farmers and visitors, to make a 'frolic' afterwards, called the 'largess spending'." Limited edition copy No. 166 of only 260 copies printed. ("No. 166" is hand-written on the slip case.) Gilt top page edges.Condition:Clean covers; light stain at the bottom edge of the spine; sharp corners. Tight binding with no cracks and no loose pages. The inside of the book is in terrific condition - the pages are clean and white and appear unread with no issues found. Bright gilt top page edges. Overall the book is in Very Good+ condition. The slip case is in great condition with no issues found.

This is a scarce, very early Charles Dickens book that was published when he was only 25 years old. "PUBLIC LIFE OF MR. TULRUMBLE, ONCE MAYOR OF MUDFOG" by Boz ("Boz" was the pen name of Dickens). 1837; Carey, Lea and Blanchard; Philadelphia. The book contains "Other Tales and Sketches, from Bentley's Miscellany, and the Library of Fiction" including a story by James Fenimore (spelled "Fennimore" on the contents page) Cooper titled "An Evening of Visits." There are 11 stories in all - please see the photos for the complete list of contents. This is one of the first stories by Dickens published in book form in the United States.Condition:Worn corners (the tips of the boards are exposed); 1/2" cloth tears at the top edge of the spine, small cloth tears at the bottom edge. The front board bows at the center just a bit. There is a crack at the front hinge between the end papers.
