Description:
London: J. Johnson et al., 1803. Ten volumes, octavo, engraved portrait frontispiece and folding table, prize-plate & bookplate, later gift inscription from Buxton to his son; early diced calf with the insignia of Trinity College Dublin to the boards. A fine and most attractive set in original calf, presented as a school prize in 1806 to Thomas Fowell Buxton, the social reformer (and with his own engraved bookplate and later presentation inscription). The set has a school prize plate from its original presentation to Buxton for his progress in the Third Class of Trinity College, Dublin, which he attended from 1803 to 1807. It would be interesting to know whether the works of Bacon had any direct influence on Buxton's career, but he evidently cared for the set as he presented it to his eldest son and the Second Baronet, Edward North Buxton and his wife Catherine, on 12 December 1836. .

Description:
Upsala & Leipzig: Magnus Swederus, 1779. Octavo, large map and chart and eleven plates (most folding), 13 plates in total; contemporary quarter roan and marbled boards. First German edition, preceded only by the very rare Swedish edition of 1777, and followed by London and Paris editions in the 1780s. This study, a major work on the geography, history, and culture of Iceland, was written and edited by Uno von Troil, who sailed with Banks and Solander on the voyage to Iceland, undertaken after Banks' precipitate withdrawal from Cook's second voyage. Von Troil's work is the only major work undertaken by any member of the voyage, and naturally includes any number of references to Sir Joseph Banks and his retinue. As an interesting aside, in the 22nd letter, a discussion on the pillars of basalt, there is a particular discussion of the island of Staffa, which is noted as belonging to none other than "Lauchlan MacQuarie": father of Governor Macquarie. It is also interesting to note that this German… Read More

Description:
Lisbon: na Typografia da Mesma Academia , 1848. Quarto, 11 pages, an unusually tall copy, uncut, on laid watermarked paper in plain wrappers. Scarce printing of a paper presented in Portuguese to the Lisbon Royal Academy of Science in 1843 on the life of Sir Joseph Banks. Manoel Maria José da Costa was an influential man of letters and scientist, for many years secretary of the Academy. Although not as well-known as Banks, his writings show a similar range and deal with a broad variety of scientific subjects, so we can infer that he felt an affinity with the subject of his presentation, the illustrious Banks. This rare pamphlet was apparently not known to the Banks scholar Harold B. Carter for his Sir Joseph Banks... A guide to biographical and bibliographical sources. .

Description:
London: Printed for H.D. Symonds and Curtis, 1805. Some spotting and embrowning, but a good copy.. Octavo, six engraved plates in the first work, and one folding engraved plate by Bauer in the second work; contemporary half calf (restored). One of remarkably few works by Joseph Banks to have appeared in print. Despite his general pre-eminence in scientific and enlightenment London, and despite having been one of the most prolific correspondents known, Banks was remarkably shy of print and hardly anything was published over his name. He had a particular interest in agricultural crops. He became alerted to the increasing problem of blight in wheat and corn in 1804 and, in the face of a devastating drop in the harvest that year, worked with Franz Bauer (Ferdinand Bauer's elder brother) in examining and recording specimens in an attempt to discover the means by which the disease was transmitted. "Blight" or "rust" in wheat and corn was a problem for farmers both in England and abroad, including… Read More

Description:
Paris, 1824. In very good condition.. Stipple-engraved portrait, 204 x 120 mm. Fine head-and-shoulders portrait of Sir Joseph Banks by Ambrose Tardieu. Banks is shown wearing the star and garter' the comments that the image was based on the painting by Sir Thomas Phillips, and the borrowing is certainly very clear. The caption also gives a potted biography of Banks, noting his death in London in 1820, and thus helping to date the engraving which was no doubt engraved and issued to mark his death. Tardieu (1788-1841) was an accomplished engraver who published a series of portraits of great contemporary scientists including Volta and Ampere. .

Description:
Madrid: M. Pita, 1833. Some slight wear to extremities of binding but a neat and most attractive copy.. 16mo (115 x 75mm), engraved frontispiece, 192 pp.; a fine fresh copy in contemporary Spanish marbled calf, gilt spine, red morocco label. Very rare Spanish imprint detailing the life and adventures of the gentleman pickpocket George Barrington. Ferguson records many versions of Barrington in one form or another, perhaps the most exotic being the Russian translation published in Moscow in 1803 (known from the single copy in the Mitchell Library), but this bizarre Spanish version eluded him; nor did any copy appear in time to be added to the Ferguson Addenda. More recently Garvey has identified four copies: Mitchell Library, National Library of Australia, and two in the Spanish national library. This is essentially an abridgement of the Voyage to New South Wales, but is more than just a translation as extra editorial matter includes a section of fifteen pages concerning the geography of Australia,… Read More

London: T. Cadell and W. Davies, 1806. In fine condition.. Quarto, with two folding maps and 18 coloured aquatint plates after W. Alexander and S. Daniell (of 19, with Plate I, the "View of Funchal in Madeira", present in photo-facsimile only); otherwise a fine copy in contemporary sprinkled calf, flat spine banded in gilt with gilt emblem at head of spine. First edition: this handsome colour-plate voyage book is the first illustrated English work on South Vietnam, particularly the region of Da Nang and Hue: Barrow gives the first accurate description of the region and its inhabitants by an Englishman. Dampier had touched in Vietnam on his circumnavigation more than one hundred years prior to this, but his visit was largely confined to the areas around the Gulf of Tonkin. Although missing one of its coloured plates (which is supplied in good facsimile), this is how the book sat on the shelves of the Northern Lighthouses Board, the Edinburgh-based body founded in 1786 to oversee the construction of… Read More

Description:
London: Thos. Macklin, 20 October, 1792. Very good.. Stipple engraving, 290 x 210 mm., An uncommon portrait of Cook's great first biographer, stipple-engraved by the great artist Bartolozzi, famous for his role in producing many of the engravings relating to Cook's third voyage, including a portrait of Cook and the famous separately-issued death scene at Kealekekua. Reverend Andrew Kippis (1725-1795) was an antiquarian and writer who wrote the most important biography of Cook, published in 1788. Like the other two main landlubber writers who worked on Cook's voyages, John Hawkesworth and the Canon John Douglas, Kippis and his biography have attracted some criticism, but its importance to the legacy of Cook is immeasureable, not least because some version remained the standard biography, endlessly reprinted, for over a century. The engraving was made by William Artaud, and is the first portrait of Kippis recorded by the UK National Portrait Gallery. .

Description:
Paris: gravé par Tardieu, 1808. Blank margins slightly rubbed with a few a few closed tears, fine overall.. Engraved chart; 580 x 850 mm. Impressive early chart of the South Australian coastline revealing French colonial ambitions for Australia, a result of the survey undertaken during the Baudin expedition in Australian waters during 1802. As the title "Terre Napoleon" confirms, the map is tangible proof of French colonial ambitions for Australia. At the time of the Baudin voyage a Napoleonic order existed to conquer the continent, a plan ultimately frustrated by defeat in Europe. The place names engraved on this chart are almost entirely in French; interestingly, when the second edition of Baudin's voyage was published in 1824 most of these names were, without comment, discreetly changed into English. Although the map bears the engraved date of 1808 it was included in the atlas volume of the official voyage account published in 1812. A milestone in mapping the continent, this was the first… Read More

Description:
Paris: Librairie Plon, 1888. A fine copy.. Small octavo, with seven folding maps; in the original printed pale blue wrappers. First edition: a very scarce publication, by a French naval officer who sailed with the D'Entrecasteaux expedition in the 1790s. Admiral Charles Baudin played a role in the history of both Texas and Mexico: in 1838 he was sent by the government of King Louis Philippe in command of a blockading squadron to Mexico, 'accompanied by the king's third son, Prince Joinville. During the siege, known in Mexican history as the "Pastry War," all of the French provisions (including drinking water) were shipped from Havana. 'President Mirabeau B. Lamar sent Col. Barnard E. Bee to Veracruz to obtain Mexican recognition of Texas independence, but the Mexicans refused to see Bee, who consulted with Baudin and Joinville. Through the blockade of Veracruz, by engaging the military and depriving Mexico of import duties, its principal source of revenue, France impeded Mexico's attempts to… Read More

Paris: [Arthur Bertrand], 1824. In very good condition.. Single sheet, 335 x 232 mm., wove paper, engraving. This original engraving is a detailed study of an Aboriginal encampment on Peron Peninsula, Shark Bay, Western Australia. It was issued as a full page engraving in Voyage de Decouvertes aux Terre d'Australes... by Francois Peron and Louis Freycinet, Paris, 1824 In 1800 the largest scientific expedition ever to set sail from Europe left France under the command of Nicolas Baudin. On board were botanists, zoologists, astronomers, geographers, mineralogists, gardeners and a pharmacist. Over the next four years 100,000 animal specimens were collected, of which 2,500 were new species. Following the deaths of many scientists and artists en route, assistant gunner Charles Alexandre Lesueur was appointed expedition artist. Here he shows in great detail the traditional shelters of this encampment. .

Le Havre: Museum d'histoire naturelle, 1920. Some leaves loose in the binding, but a good copy bound.. Large octavo, 42 plates; in marbled parchment boards, original wrappers. A detailed and surprisingly rare monograph on the Baudin voyage artist and naturalist Lesueur and the later period of his life spent in America, which includes a brief summary of his work on the Baudin expedition. He is renowned for his exceptional illustrations in the official publication of the voyage: 'Lesueur's scientific work runs parallel to artistic work of great importance. He was at one and the same time draughtsman and painter, naturalist and landscape artist. His talent was recognised in France in his own lifetime, by the award... of the silver medal of the Société des Beaux-Arts...' (Baudin in Australian Waters, p. 26). This publication is of particular interest for Lesueur's later career. In 1815, he travelled to the United States with the American geologist William Maclure, and in 1825 joined the New Harmony… Read More

Description:
Paris, 1807. A few spots of very light foxing in the margin.. Engraved print measuring 320 x 240 mm. An interesting portrait of a warrior of the Port Jackson tribe, Norou-gal-derri, "ready for battle". During the Baudin voyage the French stayed in Port Jackson for some five months, ample time for the artists to become very involved with the local aboriginal populace, and indeed the Baudin voyage account is well-known for the beautiful suite of portraits engraved after originals by Petit. Very little is known about Norou-gal-derri, which is a shame because the present portrait represents a rare example of a full-length portrait after Petit. Petit has clearly used the image as a vehicle for giving a more thorough understanding of the clothing and adornments of an aboriginal warrior, but also in order to show the use of some of the weaponry. In this sense, this portrait forms a complement to plate 22 from the same atlas, a more technical engraving which depicts baskets, weapons, and fishing… Read More

Description:
Paris, 1807. Slight marginal browning, very good condition.. Engraved portrait, 315 x 240 mm. (plate size). A striking portrait of the Tasmanian man Grou-Agara by Petit prepared for the atlas volume of the first edition of the official account of the Baudin voyage. The two ships of the expedition had anchored in d'Entrecasteaux Channel on 13 January 1802 after two months at sea; Frank Horner has called the time that followed 'two of the most productive months the expedition was to enjoy' (The French Reconnaissance, p. 191). Their easy and friendly relations with the aboriginal tribes of the region had brought great satisfaction to the French, and they maintained a good rapport throughout their stay. Petit, in particular, was very busy with his sketch book, and his series of portraits and scenes are among the most sensitive portrayals of Tasmanian aborigines - in fact, together with the handful of portraits in the official account of Cook's third voyage, these portraits are the earliest major study… Read More

Description:
Paris, 1828. Slight toning, very good.. Engraved portrait, 255 x 195 mm. Fine portrait of important medical researcher into cholera and scurvy, Pierre François Keraudren. Although Keraudren did not sail with Baudin, he played a formative part in the outfitting of the expedition, because in his role as a French naval surgeon he wrote the instructions to be followed on board to preserve the health of the sailors on the long expedition. It has also been suggested that Keraudren intended to sail, but was overlooked for some reason; certainly he had a good relationship with many on board, notably Lesueur, and several important Australian landfalls including both Point and Cape Keraudren in western Australia were named in his honour. In 1804, soon after the return of the vessels, he also published his important work on scurvy, Réflexions sommaires sur le scorbut, which took into account the devastation wrought by the disease on the Baudin expedition. The portrait was engraved by Ambroise Tardieu… Read More

Paris: A. Nepveu, 1812. Two volumes octavo of text, with small folio atlas of 45 plates and charts (5 folding); the text volumes in contemporary quarter calf bindings, spines gilt with double labels, the atlas completely unbound and the loose plates contained in a matching bookform case. A significant and well-illustrated "alternative" account of a portion of the Baudin voyage to the southern lands, documenting the early stages of the voyage aboard the Géographe, but chiefly detailing life and conditions at Mauritius. Jacques-Gérard Milbert (1766-1840), French naturalist and artist, was invited by Bory de Saint Vincent to join the Baudin expedition as one of the official artists but took advantage of an illness to be left in Port Louis when the ships sailed for New Holland (several of his shipmates commented that the artist had seemed depressed and anxious about the voyage). Description:
Paris, 1814. Folio, 320 x 205 mm, manuscript in ink on first page of a bifolium, the other 3 pp blank; (accompanied by an earlier note by Rosily). Formal letter from the Napoleonic minister Fontanes, thanking Admiral Rosily, head of the Dépôt de la Marine, for having presented him with "l'Atlas du Voyage du Capitaine Baudin aux terres australes". This refers to the hydrographical atlas of the 1800-1804 Baudin voyage to Australia, with its accompanying text, the work of Louis and Henri de Freycinet, publication of which was formally completed in 1815. Since this letter is dated 26 December 1814 it must be acknowledging an early pre-publication presentation. The rarest part of the official account of the Baudin voyage, the hydrographical section of the voyage with its glorious Atlas was the first full atlas of the Australian coastline. Not only was it the distinguished rival of Flinders' more famous (because English) Atlas but it also substantially preceded the English work's appearance. The text… Read More

Mauritius, 1803. Fine original condition.. Pencil sketch, 135 x 195 mm.; laid down on the original blue-paper mount, signed on the lower left of the mount and captioned. A striking pencil sketch by the Baudin voyage artist Milbert, done in the south-west of Mauritius after he had jumped ship from the Géographe on Baudin's expedition to Australia and the Pacific in 1801. Jacques-Gérard Milbert (1766-1840) had joined the Baudin expedition as one of the official artists but took advantage of an illness to be left in Port Louis when the ships sailed for New Holland (several of his shipmates commented that the artist had seemed depressed and anxious about the voyage). In a curious twist, he was still in Port Louis when the Géographe returned from Australia in 1803, and rejoined the expedition. Back in France, Milbert was given the task of overseeing the publication of the plates for Péron and Freycinet's official account (1807-1816), and also wrote his own companion account, the Voyage Pittoresque… Read More
