Description:
1903. An Awful Warning to Bad Babas. By the Author of "Little Black Mingo" and "Little Black Quibba." London: James Nisbet & Co., 1903. Original light olive cloth illustrated in black and printed in red. First Edition of the most unusual, and one of the least-known, of Helen Bannerman's eight small-format books for children. Five of the eight were about "black" children (though they were really about native Tamils in the region of southern India where Helen Bannerman lived) -- usually outwitting fierce animals that threatened them: LITTLE BLACK SAMBO (1899), LITTLE BLACK MINGO (1901), LITTLE BLACK QUIBBA (1902), LITTLE BLACK QUASHA (1908) and LITTLE BLACK BOBTAIL (1909). Her other three were this one, PAT AND THE SPIDER (1905) and THE TEASING MONKEY (1907). LITTLE DEGCHIE-HEAD (a "degchie" is a large handle-less pot frequently used in Indian cuisine) is about a little (white) girl named Mary who despite warnings from her mother, cannot resist… Read more

Description:
1928. [with letter from Cynthia Asquith] London: Hodder and Stoughton, 1928. Original blue-grey cloth with cover and spine labels, with dust jacket. First Edition of Barrie's famous play featuring Peter Pan and Tinker Bell, the Darling children and Nana, and of course Captain Hook and Smee. "Peter Pan" first turned up as a relatively minor character in Barrie's 1902 novel, THE LITTLE WHITE BIRD. Then in December 1904 this play was first produced, but it was not published until 1928, as this volume in "The Uniform Edition of The Plays of J. M. Barrie." (In the interim, 1911 to be specific, Barrie wrote a narrative version which was published as the book PETER AND WENDY.) Included in this book is Barrie's 29-page Dedication "To the Five" in which he relates how, decades earlier, he had created (with their help) Peter Pan. Although he identifies them here only as #s 1 through 5, these were the five sons of Arthur and Sylvia Llewelyn Davies, with whom Barrie… Read more

Description:
1884. With an Introduction by Al. G. Spalding of the Chicago Base Ball Club. New York: E. P. Dutton and Company, 1884. 1 page undated ads (for Spalding baseball goods). Original red cloth pictorially decorated in black and gilt, beveled. First Edition of "the first novel devoted exclusively to baseball" [Grobani 12-2c]. The first book about baseball was 1859's THE BASE BALL PLAYER'S POCKET COMPANION (nonfiction -- there are only about ten known copies, the most recently-exchanged of which was priced at $39,500). There was an 1877 volume in the "No Name Series," THE GREAT MATCH, which could also lay claim to "first baseball fiction" but which is not entirely about baseball. About these two books Strecker et al. have written, Both THE GREAT MATCH and OUR BASE BALL CLUB highlight tensions between the country and the city. More importantly, they reveal the baseball team's central place in local communities and feature insight into nineteenth century baseball debates about participation versus… Read more

Description:
1896. Boston: Roberts Brothers, n.d.[1896]. [Twenty posters, each 7-3/4" x 5-5/8", plus a slightly larger title panel (probably the front panel of what was originally an envelope).] Beginning with "George Egerton's" 1893 novel KEYNOTES, for which the series would be named, John Lane of London published, over the course of five years, a series of 33 first editions of fiction; the Keynotes books came to epitomize the 1890s, not only for their content, but also for the design of the volumes -- elegant in format, each volume a different color stamped in another complementary color. And to top off the series' appeal, Lane (with fellow-publisher Elkin Mathews at the outset) engaged THE illustrator of the 'Nineties, Aubrey Beardsley, to provide each volume's front cover / title page design. (One of them is his notorious artistic impression of female reproductive organs.) As it happened, Beardsley provided only 21 of the designs for the (earlier) volumes in the… Read more

Description:
1896. An Impressionist Novel. Frontispiece by Aubrey Beadsley. London: Elkin Mathews, 1896. 20 pp ads dated 1895-96. Original dark blue cloth decorated in light blue and lettered in bronze. First Edition, which consisted of 1000 copies. This copy is of the second and usual issue, with the so-called "Portrait of the Author" frontispiece. Elkin Mathews supposedly had commissioned a portrait of Ruding as a frontispiece, and was thus rather annoyed when Beardsley instead submitted his "black coffee" one that he had already produced for the ill-fated Volume V of THE YELLOW BOOK. Furthermore John Lane objected to his former partner and his former artist using an illustration that had been prepared for his use. A very few (six? twelve?) copies were issued with that first frontispiece, but one story is that Mathews then stood over Beardsley, refusing to leave his rooms, until the present frontispiece was well advanced. The portrait "may or may not depict the mysterious Ruding… Read more

1892. Illustrated by Theodor Hampe. Chicago: F.J. Schulte & Company, 1892. 2 pp undated ads. Original mottled light brown cloth stamped in black. First Edition of this tale purportedly derived from an old German manuscript -- a tale involving an illicit relationship between a monk Ambrosius and a local girl Benedicta who is shunned because she is, yes, the hangman's daughter. This is a copy bound in cloth (originally priced at $1.25); there were also copies in wrappers priced at 50 cents. It is in near-fine condition (very minor soil, but essentially no wear). Description:
1877. San Francisco: Henry Keller & Co., 1877. Original green cloth, beveled. First Trade (and generally the first obtainable) Edition of this very early (and very amusing) Bierce piece, which was preceded only by the three 1873-1874 titles written by "Dod Grile." The "dance of death" is none other than the waltz, "a dance that causes nothing but trouble... a source of moral decay and death, the death of marriages" [Knighton]. The true first edition, consisting only of "Author's Copies" (also San Francisco 1877 but not so indicated) is "the rarest of Bierce's productions" [Starrett], so this revised edition is welcomed by many Bierce collectors as a most-acceptable substitute. Bierce and Harcourt collaborated on it; "William Herman" was William Herman Rulofson, Harcourt's father-in-law, who financed it. This is one of the uncommon copies bound withOUT the "Author to the Public" note at the end: since this was… Read more

1909. San Francisco: A.M. Robertson, 1909. Original brown cloth decorated in black, with dust jacket. First Edition. Per the author's note, "It was expected that this book would be included in my 'Collected works' now in course of publication, but unforeseen delay in the date of publication has made this impossible." This copy is in brown buckram (others are in green, no priority). It is a fine, bright copy (the usual offset darkening of the endpapers) of this handsomely printed and bound book; its leaves remain unopoened, in fact. Included is the 1909 dust jacket, remarkably whole and clean, though there is one closed tear on the rear panel. Blanck 1127.

Description:
1892. San Francisco | New York: Western Authors Publishing Company, 1892. Original blind-stamped light grey cloth, beveled. First Edition of Bierce's first volume of verse, published the year after his most famous book, TALES OF SOLDIERS AND CIVILIANS. There are about 150 short poems (which he terms "beetles"), mostly gleaned from appearances in newspapers. Bierce had seen action, including at Shiloh, in an Indiana Infantry Regiment; his anti-war sentiments, and fixation with death, are reflected in his writings. In our experience this is a tough book to find in decent condition, due to its light grey cloth and frugal use of gilt. This is a nearly fine copy, however, with scarcely any wear and with only the slightest hint of soil (near the covers' fore-edge). Blanck 1111.

Description:
1854. [Vincent Starrett's copy] containing All the Melodies the Old Lady Ever Wrote. Edited by Dame Goslin. Embellished with an exact likeness of the veritable Mother Goose, and Numerous Engravings from Original Designs. New York: Leavitt & Allen, n.d. [1854?]. Original blind-stamped dark green cloth with gilt-decorated spine. This is one of the more sought-after editions of MOTHER GOOSE (which tales are believed to have originated in the 1600s). Each page carries one or more Mother Goose verses, many of them well-known, underneath a pertinent woodcut illustration. The book is "edited by Dame Goslin," and carries a one-page Preface in which the editor claims to be a direct lineal descendant from Mother Goose -- and claims that the heretofore-unpublished illustrations, by a contemporary of Mother Goose, were found in a bureau drawer. (Not!) The covers are blind-stamped with "Uncle George's Juveniles" -- in honor of George Ayres Leavitt (1822-1888), who in the… Read more

Description:
1886. By the Author of "Lady Audley's Secret," "Vixen," "Ishmael," etc. London: John and Robert Maxwell, [1886]. Original dark green cloth with spine lettered in gilt. First Edition (after serialization in Belgravia) of this novel by the founder of the intricately plotted sensation novel, particularly known for her transgressive heroines. It is no coincidence that her early novels were published by Maxwell: in 1861 she had moved in with John, but since he already had five children by his wife who was confined to a mental asylum in Ireland, she did not marry him until 1874, when his first wife died; they then married, but already had numerous children themselves. MOHAWKS was the last of Braddon's books to be published under the Maxwell imprint [and curiously is undated on its title pages]. This historical novel begins in 1708 and ends in 1727, the year of George II's coronation. The plot centers around two girls who have been switched at birth and features many actual historical figures,… Read more

Description:
1890. By the Author of "Lady Audley's Secret," "Vixen," "Ishmael," "The Day Will Come," etc. London: Simpkin, Marshall, Hamilton, Kent & Co., 1890. Original dark green cloth with spines lettered in gilt. First Edition of this novel by the founder of the intricately plotted sensation novel, particularly known for her transgressive heroines. By 1890 her books were no longer being published by John Maxwell, whom she had met and moved in with in 1860, and had the first of six children the following year -- even though he was already married with five older children (his wife was in an Irish asylum; the couple waited to marry until she died, in 1876). This tale is part lurid sensationalism, part mystery... Clara and Robert Hatrell lead an ideal life with their young daughter Daisy in a beautiful old fashioned cottage on the banks of the Thames. When his son Cyril goes away to school their friend and neighbor Ambrose Arden who is a notable scholar offers to tutor Daisy. Some time later Robert carrying… Read more

Description:
1915. [Chicago:] The Chicago Little Theatre, 1915. Original pictorial wrappers. First Edition of Rupert Brooke's only play, considered (by Keynes among others) to have consisted of only 200 copies. Before the war young Brooke wrote this play, never expecting it to be performed (a stranger gets lost in rural Lithuania and stops for the night at a hut where there's this farmer's daughter...). However it was in fact produced at The Chicago Little Theatre, and this booklet was published, in October 1915 (six months after Brooke had died of sepsis while part of the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force en route to Gallipoli). This experimental art theatre had been founded in 1912 by the British poet Maurice Browne and his wife Ellen Van Volkenburg (the American actress "Nelly Van"); they had been encouraged to do so by Lady Augusta Gregory, and thus tried to model it after Dublin's Abbey Theatre. Forty-four plays would be produced in its tiny fourth-floor quarters (25 of them American premieres).… Read more
