Edinburgh: Thomas Constable, 1856.. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Very Good. 312 pages. 19 x 13 cm. Original cloth, gilt, with Celtic harp on top board. Binding only very slightly marked and frayed at top and tail of spine. Dedicated to Charles Dickens Ballantine was born in the West Port of Edinburgh in 1806. He started as a house painter before becoming a celebrated practitioner of glass painting. The stained glass windows in the English House of Lords are his work. He was an admirer of Burns and also wrote some of his poems, songs and ballads in dialect. He died in 1877.

Description:
Hartford: F. C. Brownell, 1857.. Hardcover. Good. 364 pages, engraved plates. Part one contains information on institutions in Italy, Switzerland, Prussia, Wurtemberg, Hamburg, France, Belgium, Holland and Great Britain, including separate chapters on Scotland and Ireland. Part two is in fact merely a one page statistical table and a 4 page bibliography and index. A good clean copy internally but the top of the backstrip is detached and frayed at edges, with an old strip of sellotape over the gilt spine lettering of Reformatory. There is also a small piece missing from the foot of the backstrip and the top board is almost detached. Barnard was a noted American educationalist and long serving editor of the American Journal of Education. With the round library blindstamp of John and Joan Ellard. John Ellard was probably the eminent Australian psychiatrist, 1924-2011.

Modern inscription on backing board: 'Gayimai Tribe 1876 The original Aboriginal Pole House Family Stokes Point Warringah NSW. Photographed by C Bayliss 1876.' Stokes Point is on Pittwater at Avalon, just north of Sydney. The Gayimai traditionally occupied the North Head and Manly districts. Bayliss arrived in Melbourne from England with his family in 1854 . In 1866 he started working with traveling photographer Beaufoy Merlin and through his recommendation, Bernhardt Holtermann, who bought him his first panoramic camera. Full calf with decoration in gilt. Maroon title label. Marbled endpapers. Calf slightly rubbed, in good sturdy condition, with minor blemish to bottom corner of bottom board. Only minor occasional signs of use internally. With the name 'Bouilly" written in ink on half title. Bouilly, 1763-1842, was a playwright and a politician of the French Revoluton, as well as a children's author. In 1799 he was appointed to the Committee of Public Instruction. In 1799 he retired from public life to write.
