Description:
BAC Original Art SIGNED. "What is the dictatorship of incompetence?" Colorful political cartoon, in French, signed and dated, "FBac May 1948," rendered in ink and artist's pencil. Bac was well known for his poster illustrations depicting late 19th century.Parisian. Translation: " Topic ( Of the time of Louis IV) 'What is the dictatorship of incompetence?' It's when you acknowledge that , while you were away, someone loyal to you took steps to avoid a major mistake, and all you have to say is: It was for me to decide. I am in command." Bac's cartoon is a likely critique of France's then president Vincent Auriol who presided over the Fourth Republic from 1947-54, a time of political and economic turmoil. The drawing measuring 8.25 x 10.6 floats on a dark gray mat overlaid with a white mat, framed in black satin finished wood, matted and framed in museum quality materials, framed in 5/8/inch black satin wood. Description:
Bagnold's best known novel is "National Velvet" (1935). Her most successful play is "The Chalk Garden." Both of her best known works were made into well received films. On the first free end paper of our copy of "The Chalk Garden", extending onto the inside cover as well as the inside dust jacket, Bagnold has drawn a colorful seaside sketch of her own home, Rottingdean, in Sussex, England. Her garden at Rottingdean inspired the play's setting. She dedicates her charming drawing to drama and film writer, Terrence Rattingan (1911-77) whose bookplate is affixed to the inside cover. She writes, "For Darling Terry....This is how Rottingdean should be...." She signs, "Enid." She identifies her "Palace" and "Terry's House" as well as "The Sea" in her sketch. The drawing is rendered in red pen and water color. With the program for the play's 1956 production in London at the "Theatre Royal Haymarket" directed by John Gielgud. The book is very good condition overall with a slight stain in the upper right to the… Read More

Beaton stayed at The Drake hotel in 1956 when he photographed Marilyn Monroe there. He was also staying at the hotel in 1961 when he sketched a costume design for the Metropolitan Opera's production of "Turandot" (in the collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum). In the Sept. 1, 1959 (Volume 23, no. 18) issue of Look Magazine, Beaton's photographs of Japan were published. The group offered here is related to that issue. It was very sweet of you to send me a Christmas card - never knew your address until now so could not thank you - I looked all over Europe for you but could not locate you - you promised to show me France - when are you coming out here - expect to go to New York in a few weeks. Description:
Discussing "Blackboard Jungle," Berman writes a substantial letter addressing racial tensions of the mid 1950s. He also discussesthe quality of his own films. To Kathryn Buchman. In part, "Sweetheart, about your line 'it would be sad, especially now with all the racial problems at their peak, to think only in terms of violence' Do you really think that violence is what we are thinking about. It is the last thing on our minds. We have eliminated 98% of the violence from the book. Our greatest desire...from the inception of this project...has been to further the cause of the black in the world. We felt we had done a good job of this in "Blackboard" and I have felt it about others of my films often. For example on my wall is hanging a citation given to me by a negro organization (in 1945) which reads as follows "The Interracial Film and Radio Guild proudly presents this unity scroll to PSB for his outstanding contribution to universal understanding thru the medium of motion pictures by production of the… Read More

Description:
Isabel Bishop , Autograph Letter Signed, with original drawing. The working class woman in mid-century Manhattan was often the subject of Bishop's art . Here, Bishop generously responds to an autograph request by including a sketch of a young woman on a subway train. She writes, "Thank you for your note, telling me of your being an autograph collector. You honor me by including me in your list...." To the left of her closing and signature, with pen and ink she draws a pensive, or perhaps napping, young woman on a subway, eyes closed, face resting on her hand. She sketched a question mark above her hair and noted the address for Times Square on the car's back wall, "42 St." She signs in full, "Isabel Bishop." The 8vo letter written from New York City is dated April 7, 1942. Bishop studied in New York at the Arts Students League and made New York her home. Her painting and illustration focused on the city's people and landscape particularly after she moved to Union Square in 1926. Before arriving in… Read More

In this handwritten letter on a card with a hole punched in the top right and bottom right corners, the author writes, "Dear Mr. Plaumann, Unfortunately I had misplaced your letter of Sept. 24. I don't see a petition in which my name appears or which - as may be the case - even originates with me, as promising success; worse, it would be hindering and detrimental. That has been my prior experience, to my sorrow and that of others. How much more valid that is now!
