Booklet contains a large full page b&w detailed map of the battefield, and many large b&w photos of the area before and after the Civil War. No photos of battle scenes or destruction from the war. Each photo has a lengthy caption describing the importance of the area pictured. Eight pages of stories told to editor Oliver T. Reilly by veterans of the battle. Lincoln's address at the dedication of the Gettysburg National Cemetery. Also the story of Antietam from the tablets erected by the battlefield Commission separated into Confederate and Union tablets. Booklet is clean with a couple of soiled spots on back cover. These photos were originally intended to be published with Tobacco Road, and this was accomplished with this limited edition. Uncommon. I have to say right up front that I've never cared for Erskine Caldwell's writings. I think he mostly paints southerners in an unsympathic light, for all that he grown up in Georgia, he does'nt seem like a southerner. He points out our rough spots, while neglecting the good. This book was written in 1966. Some things have changed, some have not. This book is mostly about religion throughout the South, in all social spheres, in all education brackets. Part one was published in England under the title"In the Shadow of the Steeple" Part II, "AT the other end of Town" is published in this volume for the first time. The Atlanta Times was an ultra-conservative newspaper started in 1964 in reaction to the Civil Rights Movement in Georgia. The Atlanta paper survived for 15 months, officially closing on August 31, 1964, having lost between 2 and 3 million dollars during its short life span. This book is full of financial information, and has quite a bit in the last section of book about Lester Maddox. Book is clean, tight, with no markings or soiling, and signed to former owner with best regards. Fairly scarce.

No pictures or illustrations. Book is amazingly tightly bound, with one small break in front end papers, but hinge is still strong (rear hinge is whole).
