Description:
New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1943. First Edition. First publication in book format of three short novels: Career in C Major, The Embezzler, and Double Indemnity. Because screenwriting in Hollywood occasionally dried up, Cain often found himself in need of money; Double Indemnity was written during one of those dry periods. Cain worked quickly to finish this tale of sex, murder, and insurance fraud set in California, and managed to sell it to Liberty Magazine for $5,000, where it ran as an eight-part serial in 1936. The serial was sensationally popular, reportedly adding eight million to the magazine's circulation (Hoopes, p.303). Basis for Billy Wilder's 1944 film noir, with a screenplay by Raymond Chandler, starring Fred MacMurray, Barbara Stanwyck, and Edward G. Robinson. The Dark Page, Vol.1, pp.44-45; Hubin, p.61; Pronzini & Muller, pp.106-107. First Printing. Description:
New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1934. First Edition. Cain's first novel, and one of the defining works of crime fiction to come out of the Depression. "An itinerant worker and the young wife of the Greek owner of a roadside lunchroom near Los Angeles plot her husband's murder. The first attempt fails; the second succeeds. What follows is guilt, suspicion, betrayal, their own deaths, and a novel that anticipated the trend of existentialism in fiction" (Baird 379). Cain was a generous signer of books, nearly to the end of his days, but presentation copies of Postman have always been uncommon. This copy is one of just five that have appeared in the auction record (the others were inscribed to Walter Lippman, Tatnall Brown, Samuel Marx, and Teddy LeBeau). Lackritz (1945-2009) was a bibliophile and pre-eminent Sherlockian, whose comprehensive collection of mystery and detective fiction was offered in a three-part name sale at Christie's in 2002 (a serious literary event). A Haycraft-Queen Cornerstone title,… Read More

Description:
New York: Photo Researchers, Inc, 1964. Joseph J. "Joe" Munroe (1917-2014) was an Ohio-born photographer and filmmaker who studied with Ansel Adams early on in his career. After serving in the Air Force during World War II, he settled in California, where he developed an interest in agriculture and rural life. "Munroe's camera caught the last days of farmers driving teams of horses and picking cotton by hand. From the 1940s through the 1970s, technology brought dramatic changes to farm life in the United States. There were still families operating small farms with manual labor, but fewer of them. From family-operated farms in the Midwest to the vast fields of California's Central Valley, the joys, challenges, and sheer hard work of rural life are seen in Joe's photographs" (ref.Ohio Memory, Joe Munroe Collection). A rugged, powerful image, capturing a cowboy on horseback rounding up cattle at the Van Vleck Ranch southeast of Sacramento, family-owned since 1856. Original borderless, double-weight… Read More

Description:
New York: Bantam Books, 1977. First Bantam Edition. Callenbach's self-published first novel, and ecological utopia now referred to as "the novel that predicted Portland." "Callenbach could not find a publisher for his book in 1974, and was told that it was neither a novel or a tract. "Somebody said the ecology trend was over," he says. "I was on the point of burning it." But he persevered, collecting small checks from friends to pay for 2,500 copies to be printed" (Vaughn, Jacqueline. Environmental Politics: Domestic and Global Dimensions, p.316). Callenbach presents a vision of the future, 19 years after the northwestern U.S. has seceded, as viewed by an American reporter visiting and relaying his observations. "Appropriate technology, environmental concern, improved relationships, concern for the common good, natural recycling, decentralization, willingness to use those machines which are useful but will not harm the environment, cooperation, and careful planning have led to a society not yet… Read More

Description:
New York: Dodd, Mead and Company, 1930. First Edition. Carroll's only crime novel, centered around protagonist Joe Dulac, "Chicago beer baron and king of bootleggers, from the days of terrified apprenticeship, through a career of violence and murder, to wealth and power and the inevitable finale...But this is not merely another "gang" book. It is a shrewd and masterly portrait of a type which has too often escaped the literary camera. The author gives us the inside dope on the mental make-up of the master urban bootlegger and as a background has provided a panoramic view of the Volstead area - Chicago, with its noisy turbulence, its ubiquitous machine gun, its rococo gangster funerals, its purple boudoirs, its grimy jails - a picture that reveals in swift, bold strokes the origins of a catastrophic disorder" (from front flap). A reprint was issued by Grosset & Dunlap, but the first is uncommon, especially in dustjacket. OCLC notes 11 holdings. Hubin, p.67. First Printing. Octavo (19.25cm); green… Read More
