The present title appears to be a simultaneous publication in London and Cape Town. The book's spine bears the name of both publishers, with the block being printed in the UK. No known priority between the UK issue and the Colonial issue. The jacket's a little worn and torn, with a couple of 25mm tears, some dints to the lower edge, some staining to the spine. Morrow is best known for his collection The Ape, the Idiot, and Other People published in 1897 (from whence much of this collection comes, the rest mostly from the Argonaut and the San Francisco Chronicle). His Unconquerable Enemy, set in India, follows a tortured and dismembered anti-hero, Neranya, and his superhuman feat of escape. In The Monster Maker, a scientist creates a monster - think The Thing - that becomes uncontrollable, leading to chaos and destruction. The Permanent Stiletto follows a man who teeters on the edge of death due to a knife lodged in his aorta. A superb collection, and a highlight of the genre. The book was first published in English by Bles in 1925, this is the subsequent 1948 printing which had been retitled. As to whether this is a proof or not it's hard to say, it's certainly not the earliest state of pre-publication state from this edition as it had been titled An Explosive Phantasy on an earlier state. The book bears the publisher's stamp to the title. Typed spine label. This could quite easily be just an unbound copy that the publishers kept for their archive - odd to not have an upper wrap, but this could've just been lost. The present copy is from issue B (out of series, and unnumbered). Contributors, and signators, include Samuel Delany, Brian Aldiss, James Blish, Ramsey Campbell, Patrick Moore and Christopher Priest along with many more (see pic).
