Lacking jacket. Arguably this is magnetic north of hard-boiled fiction, fast-paced and very violent, hailed by none other than Raymond Chandler. "Paul Cain" was the pseudonym of George Carrol Sims; he used "Peter Ruric" for his screenwriting. This was his only novel, composed of stories he wrote for the legendary magazine Black Mask in 1931-1932.

It has been billed as "the first dictionary published by a Black person," but more accurately it is one of the first lexicons of African American slang of the Jazz age. Some of the words and phrases spread like gangbusters to mainstream America: "chick," "freeby," "hot," "in the groove," "mellow," "corny," and "reefer" for example.
