Description:
Pamphlet 8vo original pink printed wrappers (wrapper title), 10 pp. Slight fading to wrapper margins, normal modest aging; near fine. Despite the very cumbersome title, this is a very rare pamphlet dealing with the sale and disposition of land in Southern California. The work contends that legitimate settlers were cheated out of their homes by frauds that were committed by a few men who “have sought to acquire vast tracts of land illegally and wickedly for speculative purposes.” This represents a significant part of the land problems, which plagued the settlement of Los Angeles.

Description:
8vo, rebound modern paper board with paper spine label, new endpapers, illustrated, 156 pp. Lacks original endpapers, slight wear and fading to binding, normal browning and aging, some foxing; otherwise very good.
A rather scarce title, despite the fact that it was produced in a number of editions. The OCLC locates only one copy of this edition. Mathew Carey (1760-1839) appears to have published this spelling book for a number of years. Carey was one of Philadelphia's most successful publishers, who put out a newspaper for a couple of years, as well as many books and pamphlets. He was even wounded in a duel with a rival newspaper publisher in 1786. This little book has numerous illustrations to help with the lessons, and we are told in the preface this work has been improved, and that the lessons have been extracted from The New English Spelling Book, which was highly respected at the time. Description:
12mo modern wrappers, xvi, vii, [9], 252 pp. Title page darkened, pages are somewhat toned and foxed, some corners a bit rounded. Carver was born in 1710 in Weymouth Massachusetts. As a child he moved to Canterbury Connecticut, and in 1746 married Abigail Robbins. He enlisted in the military during the French and Indian War, and was wounded at the siege of Fort William Henry. After the war, with support from Major Robert Rodgers, of Rodgers Rangers fame, he started his journey to the West in 1766. He went by the Great Lakes route, and traveled to Green Bay Wisconsin and entered what is now Minnesota. Carver also spent some time on the Mississippi River. When he returned home he became disappointed that he couldn’t publish a book on his travels he left for England where he picked up a second wife, even though he was still married to the first. He did manage to publish in 1778 the first edition of the present work. Apparently the published work is a good deal different than the original manuscript,… Read More

8vo original cloth, paper spine label, illustrated, 376 pp. Staining to covers, front joint starting to split; foxing to contents, short stub tears to maps neatly repaired, ink name and bookplate to front free endpaper. Otherwise very good. This work is a reprint of the second issue of the third edition of Carver’s "Travels though the Interior Parts of North America", first published in 1778. Howes states this is the best American edition, and adds that Carver penetrated farther into the West than any other English explorer before the Revolutionary War. He was seeking a transcontinental waterway, and while he didn’t add a lot to the geography of the region, his work inspired a lot of interest by subsequent explorers like Lewis and Clark. Contains two folding maps, four plates, including one of a tobacco plant done by Nathaniel Currier.

Some aging and wear to covers, and map has short stub tear neatly repaired. Ownership signature of Frances O’Callaghan to the top of title page. Internally near fine condition. Account of exploration into the interior of North American by an Englishman seeking a transcontinental waterway. He went further West than any English explorer before the Revolutionary War, and while he may not have contributed significantly to geographic knowledge, according to Howes his book stimulated the interest concerning routes to the Pacific by others like Lewis & Clark. Carl Wheat in his work Mapping the Transmississippi West credits Carver as being the first to use the name “Oregon” or “River of the West”, the river people believed to exist in the west beyond the great mountains, and one that emptied into the Pacific. Catlin (1796-1872) was considered one of the most influential artists and anthropologists of the 19th century when it came to the American Indian. His interest in the subject may have begun with listening to tales from his mother who was captured by Indians as a child. After years of painting portraits of the well-to-do in Washington, Catlin set out west to pursue his real interest. He visited 48 Indian Tribes on his tour of the West, and executed some 600 paintings. The engravings in this work were taken from the original paintings, and were supervised by Catlin himself. The text and illustrations portray all aspects of Indian life,… Read More

Description:
8vo, publisher's cloth, paper label on spine, [4], 167 pp. Hinges very weak, piece missing from top portion of spine, small slight stain in the bottom margin; label faded; still a respectable copy. Channing (1780-1842) was born in Newport, Rhode Island, and would become a noted Unitarian minister and author. He was considered an important force in the development of "American Unitarianism", and his religious writings were very popular. Channing would become a critic of slavery after a trip to Richmond when he was a young man, but it was after a trip to the West Indies that this work was published in 1835. The book argues the "ethical Indefensibility" of slavery, and despite a moderate tone, it seems to have upset conservative northerners, as well as, southern whites. However, he would continue his opposition to slavery in several other antislavery tracts over the next several years. ANB.
