Warrington: Printed by W Eyres, for J. Johnson, 1777 A fair copy of John Aiken's translation of Tacitus' works on Germany and the life of Agricola. 'Germany' is the first edition and 'Agricola' was reprinted as a second edition and issued with it. This copy has been rebound probably around 20 years ago in a full leather binding with tan leather to spine and green leather to boards in a quarter leather style. The spine has raised bands with gilt lining and a title label. The binding is very clean but with a small area of surface loss to the back board. The endpapers were replaced at the same time and the fep does not open out fully. The contents are clean, but with recurrent staining to the bottom fifth of the gutter with affects the inner corner of text and is visible on page edges when the book is closed. London : Printed by Richard Tayor for the Author, 1804 A good part set of the 1st edition of this rare and comprehensive work. This set consists of 252 hand coloured plates with their descriptions bound in 3 volumes, but, we have not been able to confirm that they are from Volumes I - V with 2 extra plates. According to research [Cleevely, Nelson and Oliver, 2003] the work was first published in 6 volumes (with 50 plates and descriptions per volume) the first 4 being published in the years 1805-1807, but the remaining 2 published later: V not before 1816 and VI in late 1828. Complete sets are the exception! This set is in contemporary half leather bindings with marbled boards. The spines have gilt lining and title and volume labels. LONDON: L REEVE & CO., 1884 Plate volume only. In half leather binding with morocco leather and marbled boards. With 82 finely engraved colour printed plates of butterflies, caterpillars and their food plants. The binding has raised bands to the spine and gilt decoration and titles. It has some scuffing to the spine and wear, and wear to corners, removing the top surface of the leather. With matching marbled endpapers. The front pastedown endpaper has a small hole. The contents have some brown spotting - this mainly affects the initial leaves and early plates, but there is occasional spotting later on. The plates are not tissue guarded so there is some offsetting to the reverse of the preceding plate page. Page edges have browning.

Edinburgh: James Thin, The Mercat Press, 1974 A near fine copy of the 1974 reprint from the 1903 edition published by Alexander Gardner. The binding is bright and clean with light pulling to spine ends and a couple of small spots on the front board. Top edges with a blue tint. Contents complete and very clean. Wrap with some browning to spine and edges and a small hole half way up the front spine fold.

Londini [London]: Guilielmi Stansbij,Impensis Simonis Watersoni, 1615 2 volumes bound in one, in contemporary full leather binding, 1615 and 1627 respectively. 1st edition of Annales and 1st London edition of Tomus Alter. The binding retains the original boards and spine which has been rebacked, retaining the title label. It is slightly worn at the top of the spine joint with the front board and there is wear to corners with some loss of leather. Internally there is a label of Wimbledon College Community Library pasted to the rear of the front board and a small circular stamp of 'The Sacred Heart, Wimbledon' at the side of the Annales title page together with a very faint signature at the top. London: Printed and Sold by T James, M Cooper; J Robinson; A Don, and J Barnes, 1753 A good copy of the 2nd edition of this extremely scarce work, attributed to John Campbell. Bound in newer half calf binding with marbled boards and matching marbled endpapers. Spine with raised bands and title label. The binding is in near fine clean condition with light edge wear. Contents: later initial blank with large signature to top; title; Preface with decorative headpiece pp iii-v; text with title, decorative headpiece and initial capital pp 1-34 with tailpiece and Finis. Later blank leaves bound in at the rear. The title page is toned with some nibbling to the side edge. There is a small side edge tear to p v of the Preface. Otherwise contents slightly toned but clean.

London: John Van Voorst, 1869 A very good copy of the 1st edition in the original decorative cloth binding. The binding has gilt titles to spine and blind stamped decoration to boards. There is light wear to edges including spine ends, joints and corners. Corners are turned with some cloth loss. There is a scuff to the front board which terminates at the edge with small cloth loss and three small indentations to the same edge. Internally the original yellow endpapers are present with a neat signature of Elizabeth G Gray at the fep. Contents are complete with one page listing of books by the same author at the rear. Internally very clean and sound with the odd spot, and some darkening at the top page edge and a couple of dark spots at the bottom page edge.

London: Simms and McIntyre, 1849 A very good copy of the 1st edition. Rebound with new boards and paper spine with label. This work, with its violent scenes, did much to damage Carleton's reputation in Ireland. Contents in good clean condition.

London: J Coker and Co., Ltd A good copy in the original decorative card binding with pasted colour picture of Alice with the White Rabbit. Undated but probably around 1907-15. With colour frontispiece and 7 further colour plates by Bessie Pease, and decorative borders by G P Micklewright. The binding has a red cloth spine, which is faded and worn, particularly at the top and bottom. There is edge and corner-wear to the boards. There is some slight indentation to the pasted picture visible in some lights. The contents are complete and very clean and bright.

London: Macmillan and Co., Ltd, 1907 A good to very good copy of the 2nd edition of 'The Little Folks' Edition' of Alice, with 32 coloured illustrations by John Tenniel. In the original red decorative cloth binding with titles and white rabbit to front board, and titles to spine. The binding is sound and clean, with some mottling to the boards (mostly the back board), and light wear to edges (including spine joints), and corners. Internally there is an inscription dated 1907 to the fep, which also has a little pencil marking. The contents are very clean and in very good condition with the occasional light spot or mark. Scarce.

Paris: L'Auteur, au Faux-bourg Saint Germain et Olivier de Varennes, 1669 A very good copy of the scarce 1st edition. Moyse Charas (1619-1698) was an apothecary, famous for his pharmaceutical work. He was expert in poisons and their antidotes and this study on vipers and venom was ground-breaking and popular at the time. This copy is in contemporary calf boards with a new calf spine with gilt lined raised bands, blind stamped designs and red title label. It has had expert leather repair to corners and so is in very good condition. Page edges speckled. There is the armorial bookplate of Beilby Thompson of Eserick to the front pastdown. Beilby Thompson (1742-1799) was a prominent landowner and politician. A Paris: De L'Imprimerie Royale, 1679 A fair copy of the 1st edition of the Description de la Grotte de Versailles bound with a very good copy of the 2nd edition of Labyrinte de Versailles, in contemporary elephant folio full leather binding. La Grotte has had 5 of the 20 plates cut out, but Labyrinte is complete. The binding is sound with raised bands and title label to spine. It is very worn, with a lot of wear to corners with leather loss and to spine joints, spine ends and edges. The surface of the boards is a little rough. All page edges red. There is an old bookplate to the front pastedown endpaper - Earl Vane, from the Library of the Rev. John Vane. The binding has gilt titles to the front board and elaborate gilt decoration to the spine. It is bright and clean with wear and some leather loss to corners. Light wear to spine ends. Contents: folding map; title dated 1862; preface 2pp; introduction 2 pp; text pp 3-67 with 2 plates; appendix pp 69-74; index 2 pp and a small tipped in errata note. The appendix is particularly interesting because Clouston added it after James Farrer excavated Maes Howe and it includes detailed information about the runic inscriptions. The map has a small repaired tear at the attachment. There is an old signature to the top of the title page and the addition of initials to the Rev Clouston's name. The wrap has some loss at the top and bottom of the spine but is otherwise clean and complete. Text pages unopened and all in VG condition

London : Chiswick, 1822 A very good early 2 volume edition of this scarce novel, first published in 1793, and considered by many to be her best work. Charlotte Turner Smith (1749-1806) was primarily a poet, but also wrote novels, particularly to raise income. She is unusual in writing under her own name at that time. Her work was initially very popular, but became less so during her lifetime. The Old Manor House is set during the American Revolutionary War and is said to argue against slavery. This set was published by Chiswick Press, set up 11 years earlier. In contemporary quarter leather binding with gilt compartments, gilt titles and blind tooling to spines. Boards, page edges and endpapers marbled. Each volume has half title, vignette title page and text. Vol I 334pp; Vol II 328pp. The bindings have wear to edges and corners. London : Taylor and Francis for the Linnean Society, and Longmans, Green, and Co.,, 1894 A good copy of Part 2 of Vol 6 of the second series of Transactions of the Linnean Society, Zoology, in the original paper wrap with 8 b/w plates. This part only contains Chilton's work on New Zealand crustacea. The wrap has lost its back; the front section is a little frayed and grubby; spine frayed. Contents very clean and bright with some pages unopened. Pages 163-284 of the Transactions.

London : Hodder and Stoughton A near fine copy of the 2nd Hodder edition of this classic work with 24 tipped in colour plates and numerous black and white illustrations and designs by Kay Nielsen. Undated but circa 1915. With original red cloth with gilt illustration to front board, and new leather spine, with gilt-lined raised bands and title and illustrator labels. The binding is in near fine clean condition. The corners are lightly turned and there are a couple of very small slightly faded areas on the back board. The contents are complete and have new endpapers. The paper is lightly toned towards the edges and there is occasional very light marking mainly to the bottom margin. There is a very small repaired edge tear to the bottom edge of p246. The first plate (after the frontispiece) does not have a caption - the caption is on a plain leaf bound before it - this was clearly intentional as the pagination accounts for the extra leaf. London : Hodder and Stoughton A very copy of this classic work with 24 tipped in colour plates and numerous black and white illustrations and designs by Kay Nielson. Undated but circa 1924 (there is an ink inscription on the fep dated 1924) and the third issue of this work by Hodder. The deep yellow cloth binding has black titles and blue and black design to front board, and black titles to spine. The binding is bright and clean with slight dulling to edges. The spine is a little cocked to the front and faded, with light pulling to spine ends. The back board has some light marking in the middle. Top page edges are yellowed. There is a small area of marking at the bottom page edge not visible internally. The contents are complete and in very good clean condition with bright text and plates. There is light marking in the gutter and bottom of p89; a slight mark in the gutter and top of p236 and light spotting at the bottom of p283/4. London, Bombay, Sidney : George G Harrap & Co Ltd, 1931 A good copy of the 1931 reprinted edition in the original decorative cloth binding with 15 colour and 25 full page black and white illustrations by Harry Clarke. The binding is sound with fading to the spine and board edges and wear to corners. There is some light marking on both boards and some pulling to the top and bottom of the spine. Internally there is a decorative bookplate to the front pastedown endpaper. Contents are complete and generally clean. There is occasional spotting, particularly at pp 227-9 and from 318-320, and to the foredge. There is a crease to the fep. 3 of the plates have some browning/rippling/nibbling at edges - presumably where they were detached at some point. There is a small repaired edge tear at the top pf p10.
