A large print story book for boys dating from 1936, featuring cartoons, Irish jokes and school, sports and adventure stories illustrated with black and white drawings, with titles such as "The school that went broke" and "The Boy-Plane". Good in illustrated paper covered boards which are rubbed to the edges and lower cover, one third of the backstrip is missing and the spine is starting to crack but the binding is sound apart from one detached page. A few of the illustrations have been neatly coloured in. Ownership inscription of Stanley Evans. A scarce title, there is one copy at the British Library. Good 1936

This book comes from the Franklin Delano Roosevelt collection of Frederick Baldwin Adams Jr, 1910 - 2001, the son of Ellen Walters Delano who was a first cousin to President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Adams became a passionate bibliophile who served as director of the Pierpont Morgan Library in New York City for two decades and compiled a significant personal collection relating to F.D.R.. In 1969 he married his third wife who was a Swedish princess and with whom he shared the final years of his life in France. Adams' move to France explains the presence of his books in the United Kingdom. Fine 1995

Marie Stopes' commentary on the state of English marriage in the 1930's, part of the In My Time series by famous writers such as Compton Mackenzie on Literature and Frank Rutter on Art. Very good in black cloth, spine creased and lettering worn, lower gutter starting to crack. Occasional marginal marks in pencil, no ownership inscription. This book comes from the collection of the scientist and pioneer birth-control campaigner Marie Stopes (1880-1958) which was inherited by her son the philosopher Harry Stopes Roe (1924-2014) and sold following the death of his widow Mary Stopes Roe in May of this year. Richly varied photo album depicting student life at Mills College in Oakland shortly after it was chartered as the first women's college west of the Rockies. Large oblong album (15x11inches) 'Photographs' in gilt to upper, textured cloth covered board. Light wear to edges but the binding remains sound, though some weakening to the cloth covering over the inner hinges. Bookseller label of 'Hirsch, Kahn & Co.... Photo Supplies, 333 Kearny Street - San Francisco' to front pastedown, above a pressed plant laid diagonally across the leaf. 25 card leaves on which are mounted 39 large format photos (c8x5 inches) in rectangular, square and circular formats and 150 smaller format image (c4x3 inches) including one cyanotype on the first leaf, otherwise albumen prints, mostly annotated with places, dates and names. The book is near fine, bound in the publisher's original green cloth with bright gilt titles, a little browning to the end papers and occasional spotting to the text. Good. pp [4] Programme for the British premiere of Arthur Symons' translation of Electra, starring Mrs Patrick Campbell who is pictured alongside 'Miss Stella Patrick Campbell' in half tone photographs tipped onto the inner pages of the programme, 'Photo by Rita Martin'. A brief synopsis appears on the final page. The programme is soiled, especially close to the foreedge. Hugo von Hofmannsthal adapted Sophocles's tragedy for the stage in Berlin in 1903; his work quickly took on a life of its own inspiring Strauss's opera, Elektra, and being translated for productions all over Europe. The London premiere also starred several other members of Mrs Campbell's family. Good 1908

London: David Nutt, 1886. pp 148 Books one and two of Saint Anselm of Canterbury's Cur Deus Homo? in a fine leather binding by Sotheran & Co of black morocco with raised bands, gilt spine lettering and decoration, all edges gilt, marbled end papers. This handsome volume is in near fine condition, the leather is polished, the gilt decoration bright, a little rubbing to the edges of the spine; the binding is tight, internally fresh, some spotting to the end papers. The armorial bookplate of 'Blackall' is found on the front pastedown along with an ownership inscription of Alfred L Woodard. There are neat annotations in pencil to a few pages.
