[Concord, N.H.: W.G.C. Kimball, Chase Block, 15 North Main Street, 1882. Cabinet card photograph (10.5 x 6 cm.). Photograph of Mary Whitcher by W.G.C. Kimball of Concord, N.H. Mary Whitcher was a member of New Hampshire's Canterbury Shaker community, a poetess, and the author of Mary Whitchers Shaker Housekeeper (1882), which is recognized as "the earliest cookbook in Shaker culinary literature, and the first to give bills of fare, or menus, for each day of the week together with 150 nutritious recipes for preparing a variety of fresh, natural foods. The book was not sold but was given, in accordance with the custom of the day, to those interested in the Shaker medicines advertised therein" (Amy Bess Miller, in the introduction to the 1972 facsimile edition of Shaker Cooking). The photograph is in fine condition, and contains a small contemporary ink inscription on the verso, "Mary Whitcher, Betsy Wright"

Publisher's advertisement to final page. Second edition; originally issued together with - but now separated from - Buchan, William, Domestic medicine; or, The family physician... Cadogan's Dissertation on the Gout has separate paging and a special title page with imprint. Aitken used this imprint from 1770 until 1773. The text is typographically identical with the Philadelphia 1771 edition printed by John Dunlap for Aitken (and crediting Dunlap). "William Cadogan (1711-1797) was one of the first to publicly blame the occurrence of gout upon its victims' immoderate habits, identifying the causes of the disease as 'Indolence, Intemperance and Vexation.' James Caird (1816-92) was an agriculturalist and member of the British Parliament, author of English Agriculture, Letters on the Corn Crops, High Farming, and The West of Ireland. This volume was the result of a tour he undertook in 1859 through Canada and the American Midwest. Much of the volume is devoted to Illinois, though Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, and Ohio receive a fairly thorough treatment. Includes sections on the quality of the soils, on prairie grasses, Indian corn, and more. A bit of a tide line to the fore edge of the title page; some light foxing throughout; in gilt-titled mauve cloth, with a bit of sun fading to spine, but otherwise near fine. While present in many institutional collections, this title remains scarce in the trade. [Howes C19; Sabin 9854].

San Francisco, CA; Louisville, New York, London: California Fig Syrup Co, 1895. Stapled booklet (15 x 9 cm.), 20 pages. Text and illustrations printed in dark blue ink throughout. FIRST EDITION. A promotional book (not a cookbook) for California Fig Syrup, a patent medicine employed as a laxative. Also called Elixir of Senna, the concoction had no figs in it whatsoever. This booklet seeks to tie the "purity" and "excellence" of the product to similar qualities which, at the time, were seen by the public to reside in the State of California. And so the book is illustrated with images of notable scenery of the state, including San Francisco's Cliff House, Yosemite, Santa Barbara, and other popular sites. Some light foxing throughout; tiny bit of edge wear. Very good. [OCLC locates four copies].

London: Dennis Dobson, 1956. Octavo (20.3 x 13.5 cm.), 304 pages. Index. FIRST EDITION. A book with two purposes: to explain the process of beer making to the interested layman, and to make the case for beer as the national beverage of Great Britain. The chapters cover the materials and art of brewing, ales of the past, beer and health, beer and special occasions, pairing beer with food, cooking with beer, customs related to beer and ale, and how to drink beer. A final section contains quotes about beer and ale through the ages. Fine in red cloth. in a very near fine dust jacket, unclipped but with a small early price sticker over the original. The jacket is decorated with a bright and colorful design by Rudland.

This volume seeks to "teach household science as well as cooking," and is based on the author's experience teaching in a large school in Raleigh, North Carolina, the Deaf and Dumb Institute, and "regular classes for ladies." In brown cloth, decorated with black and gilt stamped borders and titling. Lacking free front end paper; hinges started. Generally good or a bit better. Evident second printing, as OCLC records copies dated 1894. A product cookbook, containing salad recipes made with Horton-Cato's "Royal Salad Dressing." Some ink annotations to the margins, otherwise internally clean and sound. Wrappers, attractively printed in black, red, and yellow, are separated from the text, and split at the spine. Text in English, German and French throughout. FIRST EDITION. A promotional photograph album, with a title page and fourteen photographs, depicting the factory building, the trawler fleet, workers loading baskets with fish, a mechanical basket conveyor, sardines being set up to dry and later be boiled, the packing department at work, workers (mostly women), workers sealing the tins mechanically (mostly men), the tin assembling department and the worker's canteen. There is also a very interesting image of the children of workers being fed, with the explanation, "During the months of January to April, whilst the tinning of sardines is not allowed on account of the poor quality of the fish, we feed the workers' children at our expense." [París, France: Paulot & Carré, 1828. Wallpaper broadside (45 x 51 cm.), with seven-color woodcut (black, orange, green, blue, white, gray, and brown). Printed on a brown paper coated with a pale blue pigment. The text states, "Bonne double bierre", and the scene depicts four soldiers in uniform being waited on by a woman. She pours a seated soldier a drink while another stands with his hand draped around her shoulder. Two more soldiers share a smoke, appearing to have had a few drinks already. Only the woman is clearly not enjoying herself. There are no identifying marks or labels on the broadside or on the matte, but the stated publisher and date, and the attribution to the printers Paulot & Carré, are inferred by comparison with a print of the same series in the collection of the Museé du Papier Peint, in Rexheim, France. Stated "FIRST AMERICAN EDITION", but really a Taiwanese pirate issued five years after the Random House publication. The production values are typical of many of these pirates, with cheaper, thinner paper, and illustrations printed with an odd color process. In publisher's green cloth; some offsetting to endpapers. The dust jacket, illustrated with a photograph by Bouilland of lobsters on a platter. Some light edge chipping, and closed tear to the bottom of the front panel. Overall, near very good. Scarce in this issue.

A promotional, educational book, intended to teach children about milk through history. With charming silhouette illustrations by Jessie Gillespie. Fine, in publisher's decorated paper-covered boards, with spine cover in dark blue cloth. In a very good dust jacket, with just a but of age-toning, and one small chip from rear panel.

Carter's popular English cookbook (circa 1765), became one of the very earliest cookery books printed in the U.S. The American printings preceding this one were: Boston: Edes & Gill of 1772 (Lowenstein 4), and New York: Berry & Rogers of 1792 (Lowenstein 7) and 1795 (Lowenstein 8b). The Edes & Gill issue of 1772 was just the second American cookbook, following the 1742 Alexandria printing of Eliza Smith's Compleat Housewife. The two Berry & Rogers printings contained a number of changes which better reflected the American context of these books, and which greatly influenced Amelia Simmons in the creation of her foundational American Cookery of 1796.
