Blueschild Baby highlights the hidden aspects of a more complex narrative, centering upon the impassioned desperation of an African-American heroin addict who returns to Harlem after serving time in prison. This was a monumental illustration of a heavily marginalized individual, and notably, semi-autobiographical. In The New York Times Book review, the scholar of black American literature Addison Gayle Jr. called it "the most important work of fiction by an Afro-American since 'Native Son'". A House in the Uplands is a Southern saga dealing with poverty, racism, ignorance, and prejudice. It follows the story of Grady Dunbar who prefers Black women, drinking and gambling to his current wife Lucyanne. He eventually sleeps with Sallio John, a Black girl in town, which causes Lucyanne to hatch a plan to kill him. The peonage of blacks and whites, the sense of the times changing faster than the reactionaries, the hope in the younger generations of blacks and whites, the cold justice of the older white people, all underline the intense, rousing importance of the color question in the South in the novel. Caldwell was an American novelist, short story writer and journalist who frequently wrote about poverty, racism and social problems in his native Southern United States. Defend Democratic Rights! Handbill from Communist Party, San Mateo County. Redwood City, CA: Communits Party, San Mateo County, [1946]. 8.5 x 11 in. mimeographed leaflet. This handbill notifies readers of an arson crime against an African-American WWII veteran, John T. Walker. "In Redwood City around 4 o'clock beonthe morning of December 6th, before it was light, cowardly carriers of degrading race hatred burned to the foundation the almost complete home of Pacific veteran John T. Walker!" The handbill goes on to argue that the incident should awaken local residents--no matter race or religion--to the growing power of "pro-fascist forces," and calls upon them to urge law agencies to conduct a thorough investigation. Very good condition. Evenly toned, horizontal fold crease. A fine piece of history documenting Communist activism in post-war America, before the height of the Cold War.

Photos show subjects posing in natural and urban landscapes in California alongside postcards from various landmarks and scenic locations. In one series of camping photos a group of 4 young men c. 1920s pose in outdoor scenes. In one a man stands on a large rock over a stream, naked except for the towel he holds to cover himself. In another, two of the men wash dishes outdoors in tin buckets, a small camp stove beside them and homestead house with broken windows behind them. Later each man poses alone in front of the same tent, holding playfully manful poses and gazing into the distance. On the next page the same subjects are shown in individual close-ups, their eyes squinting with the force of their broad smiles. The first shows a view of Montgomery street from the vantage point of Market, the packed dirt road busy with horse drawn carriages and small figures crossing the sidewalks. Dated 1866. The second shows Kearney street, figures visible and 19 century buildings lining the road, their stone fronts ornately crafted. The final view shows a California redwood being cut by a band saw, its trunk laid open to expose the vast history of its many rings. Stereoviews, mounted to cardboard with two identical images side by side, were designed to mimic 3 dimensionality, a technology popular in the early days of photography. In very good to near fine condition. Textblock firm, pages clean. Original ownership signature on half-title. Dustjacket has some rubbing. The Plague, which tells the story of a plague sweeping the French Algerian city of Oran, is considered an existentialist classic. The novel stresses the powerlessness of the individual characters to affect their destinies. Along with the novel's existentialist themes, The Plague has also been read as an allegorical treatment of the French resistance to Nazi occupation during World War II. The novel became a bestseller during the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic.

Carjat & Cie Photographes - 10 Rue Notre Dame de Lorette, 10, Paris" dated August 29, 1878. Carjat writes in his hand "My dear Zallim, Could you offer me a booth, similar to the last one, for tomorrow, Monday, before 4 o'clock, without an envelope. You know that in exchange of your charming theater, my modest studio is at you and your friends' disposal. Thanking you in advance, and yours with all my heart, Your old and affectionate..." Signed boldly in black ink, "Et. Carjat." On the back of the letter are a list of names and their positions in the theater in a different hand. In excellent condition.

Letter is 1 page, Jan 10, 1877, signed at closing "Mary Carpenter," regarding the election of a woman to the School Board. The letter states in part, "Thanks for sending us the paper containing the very gratifying announcement of the election of Mrs. Mansfield...It is a grand triumph!" A note at bottom, signed M.P. Mansfield explains the meaning of Carpenter's letter, "This letter was written on the receipt of a paper containing the account of the election of my wife to the School Board." Mary Carpenter was an English educational and social reformer who founded the ragged schools and reformatories, bringing previously unavailable educational opportunities to poor children and young offenders. Walking through a Bristol slum in the 1830s and witnessing the poverty of its children, she realized young offenders could never improve their circumstances without their well being fostered.
