A nice gathering of materials relating to and belonging to Dr. Thomas P. C. Barnard. Barnard was a respected physician in Buffalo and an ardent Theosophist, promoting the movement at the height of its popularity. He lectured frequently [according to The Messenger] and was so determined to spread the Theosophical message and recruit converts that he stated his habit of reading obituaries in the Buffalo area and sending theosophical propaganda to the bereaved.~~Barnard was a member of the Royal Arch Mason's, Tonawanda Lodge no. 247, and President of the Buffalo Lodge of the Theosophical Society. ~~This archive contains:~ (1) Two periodicals bound together, The American Theosophist (August 1913; Volume XIV, Number 11) and The Theosophic Messenger (October 1912, Volume XIV, Number 1) each containing contributions by Barnard: "Shamballa" and "Weismann's Cell Theory and the Permanent Atom". New wrappers fashioned with a paper title label. 186 pages with a 128 pages appendix; textblock is stained throughout, but legible.~~Report regarding the partially built James River and Kanawha Canal. Never finished, the canal was first surveyed and planned by George Washington, a project begun in 1785. The project was reinvigorated by Joseph Cabell in the 1830's. This is the eleventh annual report to the shareholders of his James River and Kanawha Canal Company, and at which meeting Cabell tendered his resignation.

Two 16th century edictions of classical texts, Virgil's Georgics and Bucolics, printed by Andreas Wechelus who was active in Paris as a printer and bookseller from 1554 to 1573, and then in Frankfurt. In an early, if not contemporary, calf binding with boards double-ruled in blind to the perimeters with embossed with a decorative device in the centers. The title pages with Wechsel's printed device featuring Pegasus. There is a significantly later title label at the spine, and the holes from clasps. Pastedowns are of printed waste paper.
