Description:
London and New York: The Studio Ltd. and William Edwin Rudge (New York) 1932, 1932. First edition. 252x321mm. pp12 with twelve plates on card protected by tissue paper on which the details of the etching are printed. Original blue papered boards with label in centre of upper cover. Original and rare cream coloured illustrated dust jacket lettered in red. Very slight chipping to the dust jacket but overall in very good condition. The book itself is in fine condition throughout and the plates are superb. This is number 30 of 32 in a series published by The Studio highlighting the work of etchers from Rembrandt to the 20th century. Brangwyn was an enormously inventive and productive artist, working across a vast range of media. Although largely self taught, he did have some training with William Morris. The etchings selected here show Brangwyn's humanity as an artist, his understanding of darkness and suffering captured with a fluid beauty of line and shade.

Original illustrated dust jacket (protected by plastic cover). Some chipping to dust jacket at top and bottom edges but overall very good. Internally very good although a little toned. Stockholm/London Zephyr Books, The Continental Book Company, 1946. First Mervyn Peake illustrated edition. 186x120mm. pp. 347 [1bl], [2]. Original illustrated wrappers with original illustrated dustjacket. Very slight chipping and a small closed tear to head of spine of dust jacket and slight fading to spine but otherwise in very good condition throughout. Peake's illustrations play on the dark surrealism of Alice suggesting a wild fantastical humour. These were Alice illustrations for the mid-twentieth century. Description:
Cuba: Political Editions 1974, 1974. First edition. 190x140mm. pp. 48. Red paper wrappers decorated on upper cover with the flags of Cuba and East Germany. Lettered in black on upper cover. In excellent condition throughout. This short work contains the transcript of two speeches by Castro and Honecker on 23rd February 1974. It also contains a "Declaration on strengthening of friendship and deepening of collaboration between the Republic of Cuba and German Democratic Republic". There is a photograph of Castro and one of Honecker, each placed before their speech. The photographs show the glorious leaders in full oratorical flow. The speeches contain much mutual congratulation, much delusion and much tedium. The best bits are the reactions of the crowd, faithfully recorded for posterity. At the beginning of his speech Castro says "Comrade Honecker and I will strive to be brief". (SHOUTS OF "NO! NO!") An interesting and rare item, a must for all Corbynistas.

London: Printed by The Aquarium, Woburn Walk 2004, 2004. First edition. 232x155mm. pp. [viii], ii, [2], 235. Green cloth with illustration (by Childish) stamped in black to upper cover. Pictorial dustjacket with same portrait illustration in white, black and brown on upper cover. Endpapers decorated with a repeated sea-horse design. Some marking to dustjacket and a small stain to foot of spine but overall in very good condition and internally it is immaculate. Billy Childish is a genuinely counter-cultural figure. A writer, artist and musician he made his name as part of the Medway Poets, a punk performance poetry group based around Maidstone where he was at art college in the late 1970s. As a painter, he was a founder of the Stuckists and his disturbing style owes much to early twentieth century German Expressionism. His father was a convicted drug smuggler and Childish (who is dyslexic) was sexually abused as a child by a family friend and this trauma forms the point of departure of this dark… Read More

Description:
Knokke-Zoute Guy Pieters Gallery 1989, 1989. First edition. Signed in brown pastel crayon by Christo with his distinctive signature. From the introduction, Masahiko Yanagi describes this work as follows: "In December 1984, amidst final preparations for The Pont Neuf Unwrapped, Paris, 1975-1985, Christo created several drawings of imagined umbrellas set in an anonymous landscape. Thus began The Umbrellas, Joint Project for Japan and USA, in which the artist is endeavouring to temporarily install 3,000 giant octagonal umbrellas, simultaneously in two sites one in Ibaraki, Japan, and the other in California, USA. If we try to locate The Umbrellas within the spectrum of Christos's creative efforts, it can be considered as rural rather than urban and among his constructed rather than wrapped temporary works of art". This is in very good condition with some slight tears to the bottom of the front cover. A rare copy and very scarce signed by Christo.

1971, 1971. Eight telegrams from Curt Claudio in America to John Lennon at Tittenhurst Park, Ascot. The telegrams are pasted as a group onto red card and framed. Most are in good condition although two are water stained and two others have some staining to the edges but all eight are clear and legible. They are part of a strange and fascinating story. In May 1971, a young man from California was found in the grounds of John Lennon's house, Tittenhurst Park, Ascot. His name was Curt Claudio and he had been sleeping in the garden for a few days. Before flying to England, he had sent numerous letters and telegrams to Lennon. He felt that he had a special connection to Lennon and the Beatles and that Lennon's songs were intentionally directed at him. He was obsessed with Lennon. These telegrams sent in the weeks and months before Claudio's appearance in Ascot are addressed variously to Tittenhurst, Tippenhurst and Pittenhurst and Claudio's address is given as 300 Coelho St,… Read More

Many pages unopened, including almost all of the index. It is thought that William Cobbett (1763-1835) wrote around thirty million words during a forty year career as a journalist.
