Description:
A holographic diary and journal written in 1914 by a young California woman from Rio Bravo, California, a former settlement in Kern County, along the Santa Fe railroad near Bakersfield. The 50-page journal begins on January 30, 1914 with its author, 15-year-old Rosy Luella Thomas writing about her daily activities. The entries run through February 14 and center on going to school, playing with friends and doing odd chores around the property, where she lives with her sister and aunt. February 2, 1914: "Monday I got up at seven o' clock. We were hurrying around so as not to be late for school. Then we went out and brushed and harnessed the horse.  After breakfast we got ready and went to school. But we were around 10 minutes late. We got home late from school and we had to get in wood and get supper, and we went to bed about half past eight." Following the diary entries is a 30-page original story Thomas titled "Rosilie and Her Dog," about a young girl who becomes lost on her way home from school and… Read more

Description:
Very good. A small collection of photographs and other material associated with Lake Gregory Dam and nearby Crestline, California during the 1930s. Lake Gregory is a man-made lake in Crestline, an unincorporated community in San Bernardino County. It was created in the late 1930s by Redlands citrus grower Arthur Gregory who bought and developed the land, originally known as Houston Flat, with the intention of creating a small resort community from the waters of Houston Creek that previously drained into the tributaries of the Mojave River. The nearly 100-foot-high dam was built to protect the lake, which remains a popular recreation area for nearby residents and visitors. Recently, seismic upgrade work was completed on the dam at a cost of $24.6 million. This collection includes seven images of Lake Gregory, including three duplicates. Two are dated September 8, 1937 and show the dam under construction. These photographs are accompanied by a Western Union telegram dated February 27, 1932 and… Read more

Description:
New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1928. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good/Good. The author's first book. Born in Evansville, Wisconsin, Calkins (1895-1968) graduated from the University of Wisconsin in 1918 and worked in a Milwaukee artillery shell packing plant, before returning to her alma mater to teach English and art history. Around this time, she entered the annual poetry competition held by the Nation, submitting her poem "I Was a Maiden" under the name of Clinch Calkins because she wanted her authorship to be gender neutral. Oswald Garrison Villard, the editor, awarded the poem third prize but did not publish it for fear that its content was too avant garde and would cost the magazine its mailing privileges. It appears here for the first time. Small octavo. Original decorative paper-covered boards, with printed yellow paper title labels. The dust jacket is a bit browned, with a lengthy closed tear along the rear fold; otherwise very good.

Description:
New York: Thomas Hamilton, 1861. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. This is one of the first book-length works on "emigrationism" - the return of freed slaves to Africa. It presents a host of arguments - sociological, political, economic - for the viability of such a program. Jamaican-born Robert Campbell accompanied abolitionist Martin Delany on his expedition to explore the Niger Valley in 1859 to investigate the area as a potential emigration point for freed slaves. Their journey resulted in two volumes published in 1861: this book and Delany's Official Report of the Niger Valley Exploring Party. Campbell followed through on the promise of his preface and returned to live in Africa: "...if I am still asked what I think of Africa for the colored man to live and do well in, I simply answer, that with as good prospects in America as colored men generally, I have determined, with my wife and children, to go to Africa to live, leaving the inquirer to interpret the reply for himself."
